ADDRESS BY C. J. DOYLE TO THE
SOUTH BOSTON TEA PARTY
FORT INDEPENDENCE,
CASTLE ISLAND, BOSTON
SUNDAY, AUGUST 22, 2010
Thomas
Paine spoke of summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. None are
to be found here today. I admire your dedication for
persevering in this inclement weather.
It is a
great privilege to be here today on the same platform as one of
the heroes of the pro-family movement in Massachusetts---Brian
Camenker. It is also a privilege to be here with retired
Justice Joe Nolan, the only jurist on the Supreme Judicial Court
to defend the Constitution and religious freedom in Boston's
Saint Patrick's Day Parade case, whose sole dissent was
vindicated by a unanimous 9 to 0 decision by the United States
Supreme Court.
Susan
Long --- who has thrown her heart and soul into many good causes
for many years --- asked me to speak to you today on the
necessity of including social issues, which is to say moral
issues, in any populist and conservative movement for the reform
of our country. I am delighted to do so. To those of you who
believe in constitutional government, limited government, free
enterprise, fiscal responsibility, personal liberty, and
economic freedom, we in the pro-life and pro-family movements
support you, and we hope and pray and work and vote for your
success.
We
ask you, in turn, to support us in building a culture of life,
and in opposing such threats to life as abortion, abortifacient
contraception and embryonic stem cell research. We ask you
to join with us in defending marriage as the indissoluble union
of one man and one woman, in preserving a moral order founded
on natural law, and in protecting parental rights and parental
choice in education.
Obviously,
there is some convergence among our issues. One of the reasons
we have abortion in America, same gender marriage in
Massachusetts, and forced busing in Boston, is the decline of
constitutional government in this nation and in this state. We
live under an unelected and unaccountable judicial oligarchy,
where judges have ceased to be jurists and now imagine
themselves to be our rulers, and who impose their own
preferences under the guise of interpreting the law --- men and
women who violate their oath, abuse their office, make a mockery
of the separation of powers, and usurp the right of the people
and their elected representatives to govern.
I
have not come here today however, to ask you to support us based
on this convergence, or on the necessity to defeat a common foe,
or even for the sake of our own principles. I ask you who
believe in limited government and personal liberty and economic
freedom to support us for the sake of your own
principles. The Founding Father who named this place Fort
Independence in 1799, President John Adams said, "Our
Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It
is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." The
general who liberated this place on March 17th -- Saint
Patrick's Day --1776, George Washington, wrote in his Farewell
Address as president, "Of all the dispositions and habits which
lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are
indispensable supports ....And let us with caution indulge the
supposition that morality can be maintained without
religion....reason and experience both forbid us to expect that
National morality can prevail in exclusion of religious
principles."
For
those of you who believe in limited government and personal
freedom, you must remember that the two most effective and
enduring barriers to the expansion of state power, and the two
most vigorous and vital and implacable foes of government
aggression are the church and the family. Why is it that
Marxism-Leninism, which is to say Communism, which professes the
need to restructure the economic order of society begins by
attacking these two institutions? It is because Marxists
understand that the church and the family are where the greatest
resistance to tyranny will be found.
The
great founding father of Irish independence, Eamon DeValera,
wrote in the Irish Constitution that the family has "inalienable
and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to
those of the state." In societies where religion is
honored, where traditional morality is upheld, and where the
family is protected, there, personal liberty and economic
freedom will prevail. Conversely, in societies which try to
marginalize and isolate religion, and undermine morality, and
circumscribe the rights of the family, personal freedom will not
obtain, and if it does, it will not long endure. Sadly, this is
the type of society America is becoming today.
Brian
Camenker spoke of the government effort to proselytize,
indoctrinate and collectivize school children through the agency
of the public schools, that is to say through the government's
schools, with homosexual advocacy groups, condom distribution
programs, and radical sexual education courses and AIDS
education courses. This represents an expansion of state power
at the expense of the family. It usurps the right of parents to
control the moral and religious upbringing of their own
children. It wounds the faith and injures the morals of
children. It creates new bureaucracies, rewards public sector
unions which abet state power, and further burdens the
taxpayer. Those of you who believe in personal liberty and
economic freedom cannot remain neutral on this issue!
Thomas
Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence, wrote of "the
inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness." The Constitution of the United States guarantees
that no one shall be deprived of life, liberty or property
without due process of law. Tragically however, fifty-one
million pre-born children have been deprived of life without due
process of law through judicially legalized surgical abortion.
Millions more, in a number known only to God, have been killed
through abortifacient contraceptives which cause chemical
abortions of human embryos. Now the government wants your tax
dollars for the Frankensteinian purpose of harvesting human life
through embryonic stem cell research. Those of you who believe
in constitutional government and personal liberty cannot remain
neutral on this issue!
Twenty-one years after the fall
of the Berlin Wall, there is a new totalitarianism rising,
Its origins can be found in secular liberalism and in the
homosexual movement. Its goal is to censor, silence,
punish, persecute and drive from political life and public
employment Christian and other believers in traditional
morality. In Britain, under the Equality Act of 2006, the
last Catholic adoption agency has just closed because of the
moral impossibility of it complying with so-called
anti-discrimination law. Catholic adoption has also ended
here in Boston. In Massachusetts, Catholic employers and
institutions are forced to subsidize birth control in group
insurance plans. Catholic hospitals are required by law to
dispense the abortion chemical known as "emergency
contraception." Attacks on religious freedom never begin
with a battering ram against the front door of the church on
Sunday morning. They begin with government efforts to
narrow the parameters of religious influence
by constraining, restricting and interfering in faith
based charitable, educational, and medical institutions.
This is happening in America today.
A couple of hundred miles from
here, a few hours drive from here, across the border in
Quebec, we could not hold this rally, and if we did, what
Brian Camenker spoke of would expose us to legal penalties
for hate speech. The secular left and organized
homosexualism seek nothing less than limitations on free
speech and on the free exercise of religion, and
discrimination against, and ultimately the prosecution of
Christians and other religious believers. Those of you who
believe in limited government, personal liberty and economic
freedom cannot remain neutral on this issue!
Why is it that this nation
suffers from such a culture of indebtedness? A nation of
families prudently plans for the future. A nation of
atomized and disconnected individuals interested only in
materialism and self-gratification does not. Is it merely a
coincidence that the modern apostle of deficit spending, the
British economist John Maynard Keynes, repudiated
traditional morality and rejected the traditional family?
Many of you here today are
concerned with the security of this country's borders. It
is of course true that law enforcement on the border is
woefully inadequate. The simple and harsh reality however,
is that the underlying economic forces which drive illegal
immigration are the result of the failure by the
American majority to maintain a reproductive birth rate.
This in turn, is the consequence of abortion,
contraception, sodomy and divorce. Border security,
ultimately, is a moral problem which requires a moral
solution.
Susan Long, the mother of a
veteran, spoke of the plight of our veterans. Does anyone
wonder why reservists and National Guardsmen in their
forties and fifties, who not only have wives and children,
but in some cases grandchildren, are forced to sacrifice
their lives overseas on their second and third
deployments? This also is related to the American
birthrate. Large families produce vocations of young men
to military service just as large families produce vocations
of young men to the church.
For those of you who consider
yourselves conservative, and believe in limited government
and personal freedom and economic opportunity, but are still
not persuaded to embrace the pro-life and pro-family cause,
I wish to speak to you courteously but candidly, in a manner
the Soviets would have called "frank and comradely." First
of all, like African slavery and abolition in the 19th
century, the issue of abortion is never, ever going to go
away so long as the killing continues. Those who are
pro-life will continue until this abomination --- the
willful murder of the innocent --- is finally ended.
Neither this nation, nor any political party, nor any
political movement will know peace or harmony or unity while
the killing continues.
I must tell you that those of
us in the pro-life and pro-family cause have no interest in
any political movement which will be merely capitalist and
libertarian in its orientation, and I can assure you, that
after forty years, our patience has been exhausted by the
crumbs we have received from the table of the Republican
Party.
The profound civilizational
change represented by same-gender so-called marriage will
not be reversed by tax cuts, and the demographic winter and
increasing Islamification confronting Europe, which is a
harbinger and a warning to the American majority, will not
be stopped by the free market.
God forbid that those who are
pro-life and pro-family ever walk away from this country's
political institutions! For then we would have to say to
those who believe in limited government and personal freedom
"May God help you," for no one else will. You cannot defeat
the Left without us. We, on the other hand, are prepared to
carry on without you. Bill Cotter and Operation Rescue have
saved more pre-born children on the streets of Boston and
Brookline in front of the abortuaries in the last year than
all of the conservative politicians in Massachusetts have in
the last decade.
Let us therefore work together
to build a culture of life, because there true freedom will
be found.
