The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized the decision of Jesuit administered Boston College to deny religious exemptions to pro-life Catholics who have moral objections to the reception of COVID-19 vaccines.
The university has imposed a mandate for all students, faculty, and staff to receive a COVID-19 vaccination by August 13, 2021. Medical and religious exemptions will be permitted, but not to Catholics.
BC spokesman Ed Hayward said: “Exemptions are considered for legitimate medical and religious reasons. A religious exemption may be granted if vaccination goes against the fundamental tenets of a faith. Given that Pope Francis, Cardinal Sean, and millions of Catholics worldwide have been vaccinated, it is difficult for Catholics to make an argument against a COVID-19 vaccination.”
MC Sullivan, the Chief Health Care Ethicist for the Archdiocese of Boston, effectively endorsed the BC decision, saying the vaccines "do not contain any immorally illicit material."
Even though the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines do not contain fetal tissue, a fetal cell line from 1973 was used in the confirmation phase of the vaccines' development. Pro-life Catholics believe that it is morally repugnant to receive a medical benefit from a vaccine compromised by the procured abortion of an innocent child.
Some Catholic parents of Boston College students are resisting the university's mandate. Stephanie Grimes, a registered nurse, said BC denied a request for an exemption for her daughter, but Ivy League Dartmouth College—a secular institution—granted a religious exemption to another child. “I'm disgusted. You're allowed to use your conscience as a Catholic,” Grimes said.
The Catholic Action League called the BC policy "an appalling act of disrespect—by an ostensibly Catholic institution—for the consciences and convictions of faithful Catholics."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "At a time when most American Catholics have conformed to the dominant culture and accepted the legality of abortion, one would think that a Catholic university would be understanding, even supportive, towards the conscientious concerns of believing Catholics who affirm the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life from conception to natural death."
"Instead, those faithful Catholics are being betrayed, coerced and penalized by a Jesuit institution. The position of the Archdiocese of Boston in this matter is disappointing but unsurprising."
"The principal constituencies of both Boston College and the Archdiocese of Boston appear to be socially liberal major donors, along with the media and governing classes. For both institutions, orthodox, pro-life Catholics have long been a disfavored minority."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle is an alumnus of Boston College.

Since the infamous, 1973 United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, more than 62 million innocent pre-born children have been cruelly killed through surgical and so-called medical, or chemical, abortions.
The grave scandal of elected officials who identify themselves as Catholics enabling this hideous slaughter by preserving its legality, opposing all restrictions on it, and even using tax dollars to subsidize it, has caused some American bishops to insist that the issue of Eucharistic coherence must be addressed.
By this they mean that the Church's traditional Eucharistic discipline, expressed by the words of Saint Paul the Apostle, and reflected in the Code of Canon Law, should be restored, and Holy Communion should be withheld from those in a state of "manifest grave sin."
This move to defend the integrity of the sacrament has provoked division within the hierarchy, defiance from the offenders, and hate speech in the media.
The most effective recent exposition of traditional Catholic teaching on this subject is a short instruction, in his column, "Plainly Speaking," by Brother Thomas Augustine, M.I.C.M., the Superior of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Still River, Massachusetts.
Published this week by the Saint Benedict Center in its magazine, From The Housetops, Brother Thomas' explanation is lucid, concise, timely, forthright, unimpeachably orthodox and readily comprehensible. With Brother's kind permission, the Catholic Action League is privileged to reprint it here below:

Dear Friends,
Here are three solid reasons why “Pro-Choice” politicians should be refused Holy Communion. I am talking about a politician who publicly promotes abortion by voting for, funding, or advocating the so-called “right” to choose whether or not to kill an unborn baby. To do any of these is a mortal sin because abortion is murder.
Above all, the first reason is that Our Lord is gravely offended, insulted, and held in contempt by anyone who receives Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin. Saint Paul even compares it to the slaying of Christ, “Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.” (1 Cor. 11: 27)
This is explained to everyone before receiving their first Holy Communion that they must be free from mortal sin and therefore in the state of sanctifying grace or else they commit a sacrilege which is a profanation of the sacred.
Second: There will be an eternal punishment for those who sacrilegiously receive Holy Communion. Again Saint Paul continues in the same passage, “For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.”
Saint Thomas Aquinas states: “Therefore, if anyone, while in mortal sin, receives this sacrament, he purchases damnation…” Refusing to give Our Lord to a public sinner is keeping him from piling coals upon his head and going deeper into hell.
Third: For the prevention of scandal to the Faithful. Scandal is classically defined as “something less rightly done or said, that occasions another’s spiritual downfall.”
Scandal is given when a priest gives Holy Communion to a person who publicly promotes abortion. His action gives the impression that abortion is not serious sin and that those who actively promote it are not committing serious sin. People considering abortion can use this as a justifiable excuse for committing abortion.
The priest is the guardian of the Blessed Sacrament and must protect It from profanation and desecration. Heroic priests have risked their lives to save the Blessed Sacrament from a burning church. Such priests believe that Our Lord is truly present in the Eucharist. If priests have done this to prevent fire from consuming Our Lord, should not today’s priest prevent Our Lord from being consumed in a sacrilegious drama for the sake of politics?
Every priest, after the example of the Good Shepherd, is also a shepherd. If he truly loves the erring sheep, he will use the staff of correction to put them back on the path of salvation.
In the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Br. Thomas Augustine, M.I.C.M.

On June 6th, twenty-nine of the thirty Republican members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives sent a letter to the Chairman of the Bay State's Republican Party, James J. Lyons, Jr., demanding that he condemn, and call for the resignation of, a member of the Republican State Committee who expressed views criticalof homosexuality. In an ultimatum, the signatories demanded that Lyons resign if he refused to do so.
Deborah Martell of Ludlow, an orthodox Catholic and one of eighty elected members of the GOP's state committee, expressed the traditional Christian sensibility—once normative in Western society—of disgust at the vice of sodomy. In an email to Republican congressional candidate Jeffrey Sossa-Paquette, she indicated that she was "sickened" that Sossa-Paquette and his civil "husband" had adopted two children.
Martell's message to Sossa-Paquette read:
“I am a Catholic who loves God and His Ten Commandments. I wish the best for every person in the world, including you! What sickened me was that you adopted children. All children deserve a mom and a dad at that’s probably why you had great difficulty adopting them. If you are going to quote me, please quote me correctly. I wrote, I heard he was a “married” homosexual man, who adopted children. That’s what sickened me. Children deserve a mom and a dad. That’s how God designed marriage and the family. I wish all the best for you!”
Governor Charlie Baker called her remarks "abhorrent," and "bigoted." Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said, "There is no place for discrimination in our party."
State GOP Vice-Chairman Tom Mountain (who is rumored to be seeking a place in the Baker Administration) said, "We don’t want someone who’s antigay on our state committee," while State Representative Shawn Dooley has circulated a petition to the state committee condemning "hateful ideology" and "intolerance".
All three Republicans in the State Senate also denounced Martell. The only Republican legislator who declined to sign the letter was State Representative Marc Lombardo of Billerica.
State Committee Chairman Lyons, a former four term Republican state representative, issued a statement on June 6th calling Martell's remarks "offensive," but refused to call for her resignation, saying "...freedom of speech and religious liberty are values that are unbending and uncompromising." Lyons called Martell a "...woman of deep Catholic faith..."
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, authorized by Pope Saint John Paul II, described homosexual acts as "grave depravity." In Catholic tradition, the sin of impurity against nature is the second of the four sins—after the willful murder of the innocent—which "crieth to heaven for vengeance."
The Catholic Action League called the letter from the Republican legislators—many of whom are Catholics with pro-life voting records and endorsements—"an act of abject appeasement towards a powerful and aggressive special interest, compounded by a cowardly fear of the mainstream corporate media."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made thefollowing comment: "The members of Neville Chamberlain caucus of the Massachusetts Legislature fail to understand that organized homosexualism is a totalitarian movement which aims to censor, silence, punish, demonize and suppress anyone who opposes it. Sacrificing Deborah Martell will not protect them from its wrath."
"When so-called gay rights was being discussed in the 1980's, its proponents claimed they only wanted to end discrimination—largely non-existent—in housing and employment. Now they want to shame, stigmatize and exclude from political life and civil society anyone who expresses natural feelings of revulsion at the act of sodomy, and at the idea that those who practice this form of moral turpitude ought to be entrusted with the care of children."
"Those elected officials who signed this letter have gained nothing but the contempt of honest men and women. No one will ever trust them again. They have demonstrated, with unmistakable clarity, that they are not conservatives, but careerists, who have sold their birthright for a mess of pottage."
"The message which they have sent by theirpusillanimity is that the Massachusetts Republican party remains, as it was before, a capitalist political party, willing to take the votes of social conservatives, but ultimately hostile to the defense of Christian civilization."

On Wednesday evening, June 9th at 6:45, the Massachusetts Republican State Committee will meet to consider the controversy over Deborah Martell, the state committeewoman from Ludlow who enraged elite opinion by expressing disgust at homosexual adoption.
Martell, an orthodox Catholic, after being baited and insulted by a homosexual Republican running for Congress, told him that while she wished him the best, she was "sickened" that he and his civil "husband" had adopted children.
With the exception of State Representative Marc Lombardo, every Republican in the Legislature demanded that she resign, as did Governor Charlie Baker. State Representative Shawn Dooley, a member of the state committee, will move a resolution at the committee meeting condemning Martell, calling on her to resign, and castigating her traditional Catholic beliefs as "hateful and bigoted," "repulsive" and "evil."
Even Pope Francis has denounced homosexual adoption, criticizing it as discrimination against children.
Catholics must make clear, unequivocally, to the Republican leadership that any censure of Deborah Martell for her faithful Catholic witness will be the same as hanging a sign on the door of the state committee which reads NO CATHOLICS NEED APPLY.
Any condemnation of Martell will constitute both an endorsement of homosexual adoption and a public call for overt discrimination against believing Catholics in the Massachusetts Republican Party!
Please express your outrage and disgust at this brazen anti-Catholic bigotry by contacting the members of the Republican State Committee and demanding that they oppose the Dooley resolution, and support Deborah Martell and Chairman Jim Lyons!
Tell them that you will remember next November what they do on Wednesday night!
The enclosed link provides the email addresses and telephone numbers of the members of the state committee.
Please contact them today!
Thank you.

Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, with pro-abortion New York Times columnist David Brooks (front row, far right) at Boston College. Brooks was the speaker and honorary degree recipient at the university’s May 24th commencement exercises.
May is the month of Our Lady. It is also the month when Catholic educational institutions in Massachusetts—and their parent religious orders—abandon the charism of their founders, repudiate Divine and natural law, and embrace the Culture of Death. They make this submission by inviting as commencement speakers, and conferring honorary degrees upon, public figures who promote the slaughter of the innocent unborn.
The Catholic Action League has already publicized the shameful and scandalous decision by the College of the Holy Cross—administered by the Society of Jesus—to honor Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U. S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
As we pointed out, Thomas-Greenfield is a proponent of abortion and a defender of sodomy. As an Assistant Secretary of State in the Obama Administration, she oversaw U. S. population control policies in sub-Saharan Africa.
Holy Cross was not an outlier however, among the Catholic colleges of the Bay State. In 2021 the other Catholic institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth vied with Holy Cross in their quest to make Catholic moral teachings irrelevant to modern society.
The 2004 directive of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholics in Political Life, states "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions." For the Catholic Church in Massachusetts, this is now a dead letter.
The Catholic Church claims to believe that innocent human life deserves the protection of law from conception to natural death. Clearly, its institutions of higher education in Massachusetts do not believe this. Clearly, the religious orders which oversee these institutions—Jesuits, Augustinians, Holy Cross Fathers and teaching orders of nuns—do not believe this.
Since the Catholic hierarchy in Massachusetts either tolerates, or in the case of Cardinal O’Malley, actually participates in this overt culture of systemic betrayal, is it not reasonable to assume that the Archbishop of Boston, and the Bishops of Fall River, Worcester and Springfield, do not believe this either?
The pro-life movement in Massachusetts must insist that Catholic bishops give unborn children more than empty rhetoric, disingenuous posturing and token statements that seem more intended to give cover to prelates than to effect the outcome of public controversies.
The hierarchy must be held accountable for these shameful acts of betrayal.

The College of the Holy Cross, administered by the Society of Jesus, has invited Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, to deliver the 2021 Commencement Address in ceremonies to be held on May 21st. She will also receive an honorary degree from the college.
Since the Eisenhower Administration, most U.S. Ambassadors to the UN have held cabinet rank.
A career diplomat, Thomas-Greenfield was Ambassador to Liberia before becoming Director General of the Foreign Service. During the Obama Administration, she served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, at a time when Obama was pressing African countries to decriminalize sodomy. Thomas-Greenfield claimed at the time, in congressional testimony, that laws against homosexuality in Africa were promoting “renewed violence against the LGBT community.”
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund hailed Thomas-Greenfield's appointment to the UN, saying she and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will lead the "Fight for Reproductive Rights Across the Globe." Equity Forward applauded Thomas-Greenfield's selection, stating that she has "signaled support for reproductive and LGBTQ rights." Her nomination was also welcomed by the homosexual lobbying group Out Right.
As Ambassador to the UN, Thomas-Greenfield has pledged that it is “a personal priority” for her to “be a leader” on the issue of women’s access to “a full range of reproductive health services.” During the Trump Administration, when she worked for a lobbying firm, Thomas-Greenfield derided, on Twitter, Ivanka Trump's support for the right to life, saying "Pro life means supporting the lives of children taken from their parents at the border, poor children and people with Covid..."
The Biden Administration, reversing the policies of U.S. President Donald J. Trump, has re-entered and refunded two UN agencies known for their promotion of abortion, contraception, and population control—the World Health Organization and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.
The 2004 directive of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholics in Political Life, states "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."
The Catholic Action League called the invitation to Thomas-Greenfield "another repulsive example of the corporate culture of betrayal which pervades the Catholic Church in Massachusetts."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C.J. Doyle made the following comment: "With honorary degree recipients such as television host Chris Matthews, Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, and Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, honoring abortion proponents is becoming a habit at Holy Cross. It should be apparent by now to any honest observer that Jesuit higher education in this country has openly defected to the opposing side in America's culture wars."
"Faithful Catholics, and all members of the pro-life community in the Commonwealth, must now ask Worcester Bishop Robert McManus if he intends to dignify this travesty and participate in this scandal by attending commencement exercises at Holy Cross in May. They should remind him that, according Catholics in Political Life, what Holy Cross is doing is explicitly forbidden by church law. It is also a disgrace."

Two more leading Catholic institutions in Boston have joined the quisling chorus of praise for U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, an abortion extremist who is an opponent of religious freedom rights. Jesuit administered Boston College has published an adulatory profile of Walsh on the university website entitled "Mr. Walsh goes to Washington."
Walsh received his undergraduate degree from the university's Woods College of Advancing Studies while serving as a Massachusetts state representative. His 2014 inauguration as Mayor of Boston was held at BC's Conte Forum. Later that year, Boston College honored Walsh with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
The celebratory article, prepared by the BC Communications Office, quotes Walsh for his support for "LGBTQ Americans." In it, Woods College Dean Karen Muncaster lauds Walsh, asserting that "Secretary Walsh embodies the passion and determination that are central to the mission of Woods College. We are proud to have such a distinguished public servant among our graduates, and one who so exemplifies the ideals of BC's Jesuit mission of service to others."
Walsh's Cabinet appointment was also acclaimed by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston. In a message on its website entitled "Thank You Mayor Walsh," the agency said "Congratulations Marty Walsh on your confirmation as our nation's Secretary of Labor. We will miss you and are grateful for your partnership and support of Catholic Charities of Boston. We look forward to watching you continue your great work for the American people just as you've served the people of Boston."
The Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities—officially, the Catholic Charitable Bureau of the Archdiocese of Boston—includes the Most Reverend Peter J. Uglietto, Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General of the Archdiocese, and the Reverend J. Bryan Hehir, Archdiocesan Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services.
On March 28th, three other prominent Catholic institutions in Boston, Saint Anthony's Shrine, Boston College High School, and Catholic Memorial High School extolled Walsh in a special supplement to The Boston Sunday Globe. Catholic Memorial President Peter Folan called Walsh an "incredible role model for our students."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “All of these scandalous plaudits for the pro-abortion Walsh violate the explicit prohibitions of the 2004 directive of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholics in Political Life, which states ‘The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.’”
"In their obsequiousness towards Marty Walsh however, Catholic institutions in the city are merely following the example of Boston's Archbishop, Cardinal Sean O'Malley. In January of 2014, O'Malley gave the invocation at Walsh's inauguration. In October, 2014, the Missionary Society of Saint James the Apostle, whose President is O'Malley, conferred the “Cardinal Cushing Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity” on Mayor Walsh."
"At the time of this award to Walsh—a supporter of abortion and contraception—Cardinal O'Malley was the Chairman of the Pro-Life Activities Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops."
"On April 19, 2016, the Laboure Center—administered by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston—held its Spring Reception with Cardinal O’Malley. The Honorary Co-Chairpersons of the event were Mayor Walsh and his partner Lorrie Higgins. This came less than two months after Walsh received the 'Men for Choice' Award from NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. NARAL cited Walsh for his opposition to pro-life crisis pregnancy centers in Boston."
"These episodes are not anomalies. Cardinal O'Malley has a long history of inviting Marty Walsh, and other abortion proponents, to Catholic events and venues, where they are given platforms to speak to Catholics. Just last month, the Cardinal brought two Planned Parenthood allies, Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito to Saint Mary's School in Lynn."
"For some time now, Boston's Vichyite Catholic establishment has been fully invested in collaborating with what Pope John Paul II called the 'Culture of Death.' Those in the Massachusetts pro-life movement who are accustomed to act with deference towards the leadership of the Archdiocese of Boston, must ask themselves how much longer they are willing to be the enablers of their own betrayal."

On March 22nd, the U. S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as the nation's 29th Secretary of Labor. He resigned as Mayor later that day.
In the print edition of The Boston Sunday Globe of March 28th, there was a twelve page supplement entitled "Thank You Mayor Walsh," where two dozen banks, corporations, contractors, trade unions, civic organizations, schools and hospitals expressed their praise and gratitude to Walsh for his seven year tenure as mayor.
Included in this fawning coalition of the politically connected were three prominent Catholic institutions in Boston—Saint Anthony's Shrine, the city's popular Franciscan church; Jesuit run Boston College High School; and Catholic Memorial High School, administered by the Congregation of Christian Brothers.
As Mayor, Marty Walsh led a rally on the steps of the Massachusetts State House calling for passage of the radical ROE Act, defended the public funding of Planned Parenthood, said he wanted to make Boston a kind of sanctuary city for abortions should Roe v. Wade be overturned, and renamed Worcester Square in the city's South End after the infamous abortionist, Kenneth Edelin.
In 2016, Walsh received the "Men for Choice" award from NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. In 2017, he became the first Bay State mayor ever endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.
Walsh, through the use of threats, bullying, red tape, financial pressure and, at least, one profanity laden public rant, was the person most responsible for the imposition of homosexual groups on Boston's Saint Patrick's Day Parade.
Catholic Memorial, in its ad, actually described Walsh—who opposes Catholicism on the right to life, the definition of marriage and religious freedom—as "An Incredible Role Model For Our Students." On its website, CM states that it challenges its students to "embrace Gospel values."
The Catholic Action League called this public praise of Walsh by Catholic entities a "loathsome and repugnant act of treachery against the Author of Life, the innocent unborn, and the faithful Christians of the pro-life movement."
Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "No rational person can reasonably be expected to take seriously Catholic opposition to abortion when Boston's best known Catholic church, along with two elite Catholic secondary schools, lavish praise on a NARAL award recipient."
"The Catholic Church in the U.S. should stop pretending to be pro-life. Its pro-life position is academic and rhetorical, consisting, mostly, of formal statements, which seem intended to provide plausible deniability to bishops while Catholic institutions honor and promote the acolytes of what Pope John Paul II called 'The Culture of Death.'"
"An organization may be judged to be institutionally corrupt if it cannot confront and punish misconduct and disloyalty in its own ranks. For more than four decades now, Catholic schools, colleges, universities, charities, religious orders and fraternal groups have, repeatedly, betrayed the pro-life cause in their servile quest to ingratiate themselves with those who hold and wield political power in America."
"The pro-life movement must abandon its posture of deference towards the American episcopate, and instead, like the victims of sexual abuse, demand accountability from the Catholic hierarchy for this culture of betrayal."
The Dream Of Saint Joseph, Anton Raphael Mengs, 1774
