KIMMEL CONTROVERSY AND ATTACK ON PRO-LIFE

The vile parody of a Massachusetts Nativity Scene on the ABC late night program Jimmy Kimmel Live insulted Our Lord and Our Lady, mocked the celebration of Christmas, and dredged up invidious stereotypes of Irish Catholics.

Both The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro and Church Militant TV carried the statement by Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle, who said “Jimmy Kimmel’s profanity laced skit demeaned, trivialized, and exploited for a commercial purpose—ratings—the principal event in the history of salvation, the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity.”

Doyle went on to say that it also reflected the “culture of contempt” which Hollywood elites exhibited towards ordinary Christians.

On December 27th, veteran reporter Charlie Butts of American Family Radio interviewed C. J. Doyle on the decision by Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins to dismiss the case against Antifa thug Zachary Pelletier, who was arrested after stealing a pro-life display belonging to Operation Rescue: Boston. The incident occurred in front of Planned Parenthood on Commonwealth Avenue in June.

In the interview, which ran December 30th, Doyle said “given the repeated and unpunished attacks on Christiansconservatives and pro-life Catholics in Boston in 2019, it would seem that Massachusetts is becoming, politically, a Third World society.”

Doyle’s remarks were also carried by the pro-life news site One News Now.

ATTACK ON PRO-LIFERS GOES UNPUNISHED

The Office of Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins has dropped the larceny charge against Zachary Pelletier, the masked, Antifa style militant who stole a four sided pro-life display from the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. The sign was recovered when Pelletier was arrested shortly after the incident, which occurred on June 18th.

By his brazen, daylight robbery, Pelletier sought to impede the exercise of the constitutional rights to freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and freedom of speech, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution and by the Declaration of Rights and Article LXXVII of the Massachusetts Constitution.

Section 37 of Chapter 265 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth prohibits the violation of constitutional rights, defined as any attempt to “intimidate or interfere with....the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured....by the constitution or laws of the commonwealth or by the constitution or laws of the United States.” Since 1990, violations of this chapter have been classified as hate crimes in Massachusetts.

The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office only charged Pelletier with Larceny under $1200. Now even that modest and minimal charge has been vacated.

While jail time was unlikely for such a misdemeanor, with the dismissal of the charge there was no requirement that the perpetrator express remorse, pay court costs or even stay away from his victims, nor was their any opportunity for a victim impact statement to be filed.

The decision not to prosecute Pelletier is another disturbing manifestation of the ideologically driven, soft on crime approach of the radically left wing Rollins, who has violated the separation of powers, usurped the authority of the elected representatives of the people in the Legislature, and emboldened criminals, by arbitrarily deciding that laws against whole categories of crimes will no longer be enforced. Rollins’ policy specifically contravenes Article XX of the Constitution of the Commonwealth, which explicitly prohibits executive officers from suspending the execution of the laws.

The Catholic Action League called the decision to undercharge and then dismiss the case against Pelletier “a gross dereliction of duty, which raises questions about the commitment, integrity and impartiality of the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “A civilized society is defined by its willingness to extend the protection of law to all of its people. The most fundamental purpose of government is to defend the weak from the strong, guard the innocent from the guilty, and shield the peaceful citizen from the violent aggressor.”

“The question remains whether the sidewalk counselors of Operation Rescue: Boston are the objects of official indifference due to ideological bias, or have simply become the latest victims of the reckless and revolutionary nihilism of Rachael Rollins, or both. Whatever the answer, given the repeated and unpunished attacks on Christians, conservatives and pro-life Catholics in Boston in 2019, it would seem that Massachusetts is becoming, politically, a Third World society.”

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE REBUKES JIMMY KIMMEL

Reporter George Rhodes of The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro contacted the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today for a comment about a crudely offensive comedy skit shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The skit, which was performed on the December 10th broadcast of the late night ABC program, featured a fictional Fitzpatrick family of Attleboro presenting a Nativity scene.

The central character in this vile parody, entitled “A Very Baby Brady Christmas,” is identified as Tommy Brady Fitzpatrick, an obscenity ranting New England Patriots fan who portrays the Baby Jesus. His bearded, alcoholic mother, Darlene, plays the part of Our Blessed Lady. The images of three Patriot players are superimposed on the figures of the Three Wisemen.

Tommy’s diaper is referred to as the “shroud of urine.” If you wish to be disgusted, you can view this loathsome sacrilege here.

In response to the request from The Sun Chronicle, League Executive Director C. J. Doyle issued the following statement: “Jimmy Kimmel’s profanity laced skit demeaned, trivialized, and exploited for a commercial purpose—ratings—the principal event in the history of salvation, the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity.”

“It is also one more tawdry example of the mean spirited culture of contempt which characterizes the attitude of affluent Hollywood elites towards the beliefs and sensibilities of ordinary Christians. Nor should we overlook the grotesque hypocrisy of those elites in the self serving double standard which they apply. Christians, particularly Catholics, are made an object of scorn in ways that would never be permitted with other groups.”

“Sadly, Jimmy Kimmel, in his arrogance, vulgarity and quest for profits, injures himself more than he injures us. He seems to have no conception of the joy of Christmas, with its message of ‘Peace on Earth to men of goodwill.’”

LIVE ACTION COVERS JUDY MORSE ASSAULT

MIKE CHURCH SHOW DISCUSSES NANCY PELOSI AND JOE FITZGERALD

BOSTON BROADSIDE EXPOSES K OF C

I. Live Action Pro-Life hero Lila Rose is best known for her devastating undercover videos exposing the malfeasance, criminality, mendacity and callous cruelty of Planned Parenthood. Her pro-life news website, Live Action, has published a story on the vicious assault perpetrated by left-wing militant Hartman Deetz against 76 year old sidewalk counselor Judy Morse in front of Planned Parenthood in Boston.

The story quotes Judy Morse, OR Boston President Bill Cotter, and League Executive Director C. J. Doyle, who said that if a pro-life activist had assaulted an elderly woman, it would be national network news. Live Action revealed in the story that Hartman Deetz is already known to police. It seems that he has a prior criminal record—for assault and battery of a police officer.

II.The Mike Church Show On Monday, December 9th, talk radio host Mike Church, whose Mike Church Show is carried on the Veritas Radio Network, interviewed League Director C. J. Doyle. They discussed Nancy Pelosi’s posturing about alleged affronts to her counterfeit Catholic sensibilities and the cheap shot it provoked about the Catholic community from conservative Boston Herald columnist Joe Fitzgerald.

In response to Pelosi’s claims about her Catholic background, Fitzgerald, a Baptist, dredged up everything from priestly sex abuse to the demented murderer John Salvi reportedly invoking the Rosary while committing homicide. Doyle pointed out that Fitzgerald, despite his social conservatism, has a long history of petty swipes and gratuitous jabs at the Catholic religion.

Just last August, Fitzgerald penned a column deriding a Catholic pastor as an “imperious priest” for, quite properly, enforcing the longstanding canonical prohibition against eulogies at funeral Masses. Some years ago, Fitzgerald castigated as bigotry the traditional Catholic doctrine of Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus—Outside the Church there is no salvation. Doyle reminded listeners that not all anti-Catholics are on the political left.

They also discussed recent scandals in the Massachusetts Knights of Columbus, and the record of previous Speakers of the House who were Catholic. You can listen to the entire interview here.

III. The Boston Broadside The Commonwealth’s conservative, pro-life newspaper, The Boston Broadside, has published, in its December 3rd print edition, a story on the League’s exposure of the decision by the Charlestown Knights of Columbus to rent their council hall to Boston’s fanatically pro-abortion and pro-sodomy Mayor, Marty Walsh. It also discusses the unsuccessful cover-up attempt by the Massachusetts State Council of the K of C, who lied to pro-life Catholics by making the preposterous assertion that local councils of the Knights do not control their own property rentals.

Faithful Catholics recognize the hypocrisy of the abortion fanatic, Nancy Pelosi, when she feigns indignation over alleged affronts to her counterfeit Catholic sensibilities. Pelosi's grandstanding is no justification for Joe Fitzgerald to use her to take cheap shots at the Catholic religion, (Joe Fitzgerald: Pelosi's invocation of faith rings hollow, 12/7/2019).

In response to Pelosi's claims about her Catholic upbringing, Fitzgerald dredges up the Catholic backgrounds of every malefactor from clerical sex abusers to the demented murderer John Salvi. It is understandable that Fitzgerald, as a Protestant, rejects Catholic beliefs. There is no call, however, for his gratuitous and unsubtle gibes at Catholicism.

HERALD COVERS JUDY MORSE CASE —
COVERAGE OF K OF C SCANDAL —
ABORTION COMES TO ULSTER

I. Judy Morse Assault  For the past seven months, the Boston media has ignored the criminal case against Hartman Deetz, the left wing militant who, in an unprovoked assault, slammed 76 year old sidewalk counselor Judy Morse to the pavement in front of Planned Parenthood on Commonwealth Avenue last April. Morse was hospitalized with a concussion, and is still recovering from her injuries.

Because of a news release from the Catholic Action League, the media blackout ended on November 11th, when, in response to the League’s statement, Boston Herald reporter Stefan Geller contacted the League seeking to interview Judy Morse. Geller filed a story which appeared in the on-line version of the Herald on November 12th, and which included quotes from both Judy and Bill Cotter, President of Operation Rescue: Boston.

II. K of C Scandal  The Knights of Columbus of Massachusetts have become embroiled in a double scandal. The first is the faithless decision by the Charlestown Knights to rent their council hall — in violation of their own explicit policies — to Boston’s pro-abortion Mayor, Marty Walsh, for a campaign event. The second is shameful cover-up by the K of C State Council, who chose to deliberately lie to pro-life Catholics by claiming, falsely, that the Knights do not control their own property rentals.

Sirius Radio host Mike Church, whose program, The Mike Church Show is carried on the Veritas Radio Network, interviewed League Executive Director C. J. Doyle on November 4th. Doyle discussed the lamentable hypocrisy of the Massachusetts Knights of Columbus, whose pro-life pretensions are belied by their long record of facilitating and harboring pro-abortion politicians. You can listen to the interview here.

III. Abortion comes to Northern Ireland  On July 9, 2019, the British House of Commons in Westminster voted, by 332 to 99, to impose the mass murder of pre-born children on the six counties of occupied Northern Ireland. The House of Lords concurred on July 17th, voting 182 to 37 in favor of repealing sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861 for the North.

Formally styled The Northern Ireland Executive Formation Act of 2019, it received the Royal Assent on July 24th. The measure also legalized same gender so-called marriage in Ulster. It went into effect on October 22nd, when the devolved Northern Ireland Executive failed to come together to either ratify or repudiate the law. 

The Anglican Archbishops of Canterbury and York, and the 24 diocesan bishops of the Church of England, all of whom serve in the upper house as Lords Spiritual, dodged the vote, preferring to attend an interfaith service with Mohammedans. Two weeks after the legislation was passed, Sinn Fein, the party representing most Northern Irish Catholics, endorsed it.

Child murder has been legal in Great Britain since the Abortion Act of 1967, whose supporters included the Member of Parliament from Finchley, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher. As a separate constituent part of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland was exempt from the provisions of the 1967 legislation. That exemption has now ended.

The decision to permit the savage destruction of pre-born children in Ulster through the cruel practises of saline scalding, vacuum suctioning and surgical dismemberment is a direct consequence of the apostasy of the once Catholic, but now neo-pagan Republic of Ireland, where abortion became legal on January 1, 2019.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts wishes to extend to all of its members and supporters, and to their families, a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Although Thanksgiving is a festival of what has been called America’s civil religion, and is non-Catholic in its origins, it is a benign tradition, is imbued with Christian aspirations, and fosters a filial piety towards one’s country. Most importantly, it reminds us of our solemn duty to render gratitude to Almighty God.

Our first President expressed this pious object with these wholesome sentiments:

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

The Father of our Country was unique among the Founders in seeming to have a sympathetic disposition towards the Catholic Faith and the civilization it created. His request for prayers for those sovereigns who had shown kindness to America is directed, clearly, for the benefit of the Eldest Son of the Church, His Most Christian Majesty, King Louis XVI of France, whose fleets, armies, supplies and funds made possible American independence.

Louis was much in need of prayers in October of 1789. The French Revolution had begun three months before. This proclamation speaks to the nobility which defined the character of George Washington.

K OF C STATE COUNCIL LIES TO PRO-LIFERS

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS AT ANNUAL ROSARY

I. Case Continued—The assault and battery case against Hartman Deetz, the 42 year old left wing militant who, in an unprovoked attack, viciously slammed to the pavement 76 year old sidewalk counselor Judy Morse in front of Planned Parenthood last April, has been continued until January 16th. Contrary to expectations, the status hearing on November 13th did not result in a disposition of the case. Please keep Judy Morse in your prayers, both for her full recovery from her injuries, and that the perpetrator of this monstrous crime against an innocent woman might be brought to justice.

II. Charlestown Knights Host Pro-Abortion Marty Walsh; K of C State Council Lies to Pro-Life Catholics
In violation of their own stated position: “We reaffirm our long-standing policies of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, ... and that we prohibit such persons from renting or otherwise using facilities over which our members have control...”, the Charlestown Council of the Knights of Columbus went forward, despite pro-life protests, with a campaign event for Boston Mayor Marty Walsh at their council hall on Medford Street in Charlestown on November 6th.

Appallingly, the State Council of the Knights of Columbus, headed by State Deputy Paul Flanagan, not only failed to stop—or even condemn—this betrayal of the Catholic Faith, the pro-life cause, and the innocent unborn, but responded by lying to pro-life Catholics who contacted them to object to this scandal. When concerned Catholics telephoned the State Council, they were told that the Charlestown Knights did not control property rentals, something called the Building Association did.

It is utterly disingenuous to suggest that there is some unconnected third party in charge of K of C hall rentals. If that were the case, the K of C prohibitions against facility rentals contained in their Supreme Convention Resolution Building a Culture of Life would be meaningless.

All members of local K of C councils are also members of their building associations. The board of directors of the building association is elected by council members at their annual meeting. Separating the building association from the council is to make a distinction without a difference. To suggest otherwise is to insult one’s intelligence. The state council told a dog ate the homework lie to cover their own negligence. Sadly, as we have learned so many times in the recent past, the Knights of Columbus, in Massachusetts, at least, is a corrupt organization, whose leaders are devoid of integrity and Catholic loyalties.

III. Planned Parenthood Endorsed Deacon’s Wife Elected to Worcester School Committee—Tracy O’Connell Novick, the spouse of a Catholic deacon who was endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, was elected to the Worcester School Committee on November 6th. Novick, a former award recipient from the American Civil Liberties Union, can be expected to support PP’s radical sex education program and contraceptive agenda for the Worcester public schools.

Her husband, Colin Novick, is the permanent deacon assigned to Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester. There has been no public statement on this scandal from the Diocese of Worcester.

IV. Distinguished Guests at our Annual Rosary at the Curley Grave—Every November, members of the Catholic Action League gather at the grave of Boston Mayor and Massachusetts Governor James Michael Curley to pray the Rosary for the repose of the soul of Mayor Curley, and to pray for the souls of all of our deceased members, particularly those who have died in the past year. It is our intention to commemorate James Michael Curley as a model of Catholic fortitude and fidelity in public life.

This year, the 61st anniversary of Governor Curley’s death, we were joined by the former Mayor of Boston—and former U. S. Ambassador to the Holy See—the Honorable Raymond L. Flynn, along with his wife Cathy, his son Ray, Jr. and his grandson Braeden, who have become faithful participants in our Annual Rosary. We were also greatly privileged to have present Richard Dennis, the last surviving stepson of James Michael Curley, who at the age of 90, and accompanied by his two daughters, braved the cold to join us, and who was kind enough to share his memories of his stepfather.

One of the invidious stereotypes of Curley is that of an ethnic warrior and sectarian revenge seeker against Boston’s Yankees. Mayor Flynn demolished that myth when he recounted a story from his service on the legislative commission to erect the memorial to Curley, which now stands across from City Hall. One of those testifying in favor of the memorial was that Brahman scion, former U. S. Senator and U. S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge. According to Flynn, Lodge’s voice faltered, as he became emotional in lauding Curley’s character and accomplishments.

HARTMAN DEETZ CASE TO BE HEARD IN BRIGHTON COURT

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 13th, there will be a pre-trial status hearing in Brighton District Court in the criminal case against Hartman H. Deetz, the 43 year old Brighton man who slammed a 76 year old woman to the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.

On April 20th, Deetz, after exiting Planned Parenthood with his wife, turned to Judy Morse, a septuagenarian sidewalk counselor and, without provocation, knocked her to the pavement, inflicting a concussion and causing her to be hospitalized. The violent attack was recorded by a security camera. Deetz was arrested a few minutes later and charged with assault and battery on a person 60 years of age or older.

Deetz, a Native American activist, had previously subjected pro-life citizens praying and leafleting the facility to verbal abuse in the form of insults directed against the Catholic priesthood. Morse, who is still recovering from her injuries, has suffered from headaches, dizziness, vertigo, balance problems and other vestibular disorders. For several months, she was unable to drive or to leave her home unaccompanied.

The incident has received no coverage in the Boston media market.

The Catholic Action League characterized the episode as "vicious thuggery, targeting an innocent, law abiding, elderly woman, who was peacefully and quietly exercising her constitutional rights, while trying to offer compassionate alternatives to abortion."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "The double standard here is appalling. If a pro-life activist had committed a brutal act of violence against an elderly female, it would be national network news. In this case, the savage victimization of Judy Morse has been entirely ignored by the local media."

"The question remains: Will justice be done for Judy Morse? Deetz's attorney seems to be mounting a defense based on ideology and group identity. Many wonder whether Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins, arguably the most left wing DA in Boston's history, will vigorously prosecute a political fellow traveler who assailed an opponent of abortion. Whatever happens, Rollins' conduct and decision making will be the object of intense scrutiny."

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CRITICIZES KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FOR HOSTING MARTY WALSH

Tonight, Wednesday, November 6th, the re-election campaign of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh will hold a "community event" in Charlestown. The RSVP address—www.martywalsh.org—directs respondents to the campaign website, where those interested can donate or volunteer. The venue for the event is the Charlestown Council of the Knights of Columbus at 545 Medford Street in Charlestown.

At their national convention in 2017, the Knights of Columbus—America’s largest Catholic fraternal order—adopted a resolution entitled Building a Culture of Life, which states "We reaffirm our long-standing policies of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, ... and that we prohibit such persons from renting or otherwise using facilities over which our members have control..."

Mayor Walsh,  the  2016 “Men for Choice” award recipient from NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, has promised to make Boston a sanctuary city for abortion should Roe v. Wade be overturned. In June of 2018, he named a square in the city’s South End after the abortionist Kenneth Edelin. In October, 2017, Walsh said, “I am proud to receive the first ever mayoral endorsement from the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.”  Just last month, Walsh led a rally of Massachusetts mayors promoting the radical ROE Act.

The Catholic Action League called the decision of the Knights to host the Walsh campaign a "callous betrayal of the Catholic Faith, of the innocent victims of abortion, and of all of those in the pro-life movement struggling to protect the unborn."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment:"The astonishing decision of the Charlestown Knights to make their facilities available to the Walsh campaign is a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles and the explicit policies of the Knights of Columbus. The Charlestown Knights ought to ashamed of themselves. Massachusetts K of C State Deputy Paul Flanagan must intervene to put an end to this scandal."

"No rational person could reasonably be expected to take seriously Catholic opposition to abortion when America's largest Catholic organization gives a platform to a public official with the positions of Marty Walsh.  Mayor Walsh thoroughly and publicly repudiates Catholic teaching on the sanctity of innocent human life, even going so far as to abandon the polite fiction of being 'personally opposed' to abortion. In 2016, Walsh told reporter Joshua Miller of The Boston Globe that he would never use the phrase 'personally pro-life' ever again."

URGE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO CANCEL MARTY WALSH!

Text message announcement from Mayor Walsh of the fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus in Charlestown.

This Wednesday, November 6th, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, a pro-abortion extremist, will hold a “community event”—meaning a political rally, complete with a suggested $20 campaign contribution—in Boston’s Charlestown. The gathering will occur at the Charlestown Council of the Knights of Columbus.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic organization which professes loyalty to the Magisterium and support for the right to life. During its 2017 Supreme Convention, the K of C passed a “Building a Culture of Life” Resolution, which stated:

Please contact, immediately, the Massachusetts State Council of the Knights of Columbus and demand that they stop this outrage by insisting that the Charlestown Knights cancel their contract with the Walsh campaign. SCANDAL IN THE DIOCESE OF WORCESTER

A former three term member of the Worcester School Committee, Tracy O’Connell Novick is seeking to regain her seat on the Committee in Worcester’s municipal elections next Tuesday, November 5th.

A proponent of sex education in the public schools, she has been endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, the political action arm of Planned Parenthood for state and local elections in the Commonwealth. During her previous tenure on the School Committee, Novick received the Defender of Liberty Award from the Central Massachusetts branch of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Nominally Catholic politicians and office seekers abandoning Christian morality and repudiating Catholic beliefs to serve the interests of Planned Parenthood are neither surprising nor exceptional in Massachusetts today. Tragically and disgracefully, they have become the norm.

What makes the case of Tracy O’Connell Novick different is the identity of her husband. Colin Novick is the Executive Director of the Greater Worcester Land Trust. He is also the permanent deacon assigned to Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester. As a deacon, his duties include assisting the Bishop of Worcester at the altar of the cathedral during Mass.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “A permanent deacon is not a part time lay worker. He is an ordained member of the clergy who has received the sacrament of Holy Orders.”

“The Novick candidacy is a grave scandal, which sends a message of confusion to the Catholic community regarding the commitment of the clergy of the Diocese of Worcester to the moral teachings of the Catholic Faith. It also conveys to secular society the impression that the Church is not serious in upholding, even in its own institutions, the principles it professes to believe.”

“More troubling is the suggestion implicit in this candidacy, to Catholic and non-Catholic alike, that dissent from Catholic teaching is, under some circumstances, expedient, permissible and respectable. This incident, needless to say, is moreover, a compelling example of how improvident it would be for the Church to discard the apostolic tradition of clerical celibacy.”

“The First Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy exhorts: ‘Let deacons be the husbands of one wife: who rule well their children and their own houses.’ That does not seem to be the case when a deacon’s spouse seeks public office with the endorsement of the enemies of the Cross in Planned Parenthood.”

“A bishop must also rule well his own diocese. The Bishop of Worcester needs to address this outrage. Faithful Catholics should contact Bishop Robert McManus and urge him to clarify both the status of Deacon Novick and the position of the Diocese of Worcester on Catholics collaborating with the culture of death.”

MORE COVERAGE OF GENDER X

As the only Catholic organization in Massachusetts to speak out against the insanity of so-called Gender X legislation, the Catholic Action League continues to gain media coverage as it alerts citizens to the dangers of this lunatic proposal.

If the Gender X bill is passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor, persons suffering from the mental illness known as gender identity disorder would be permitted to alter everything from their birth certificates to their drivers licences to reflect their gender preference.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE OPPOSES GENDER X INSANITY, CALLS FOR FEDERAL PROBE OF MARTY WALSH

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts has been in the news opposing Gender X legislation, and on the League's call to investigate the Marty Walsh administration for using the same tactics in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade takeover which, in the Boston Calling case, resulted in the conviction of two city officials for extortion.

The so-called "Gender X" bill, now before the Legislature, would allow mentally ill persons suffering from gender identity disorder to arbitrarily alter everything from their birth certificates to their drivers' licences to their voter registration forms to reflect their gender preference.

In a September 12th interview with Bob Katzen of Beacon Hill Roll Call, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle called the proposal "a deranged idea, recklessly embraced without regard for societal harm or unpredictable consequences."

Doyle went on to say that "Science, reason, common sense, natural law and millennia of human experience all tell us that there are only two biological sexes. The very concept of gender identity is artificial, subjective and potentially open ended."

On August 7th, a federal jury in U. S. District Court in Boston convicted two officials of the administration of Mayor Marty Walsh of extortion in the Boston Calling Music Festival case. Walsh's aides threatened to withhold city permits unless festival organizers agreed to hire the mayor's political supporters in local unions.

The Catholic Action League promptly issued a press release calling upon the U. S. Attorney for Massachusetts to open an investigation of Mayor Walsh for employing the same unlawful tactics in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade controversy.

The League's statement said: "With both the festival and the parade, the same strong arm tactics were used to accomplish the same political object. Threats were made to deny city permits if organizers refused to accede to city demands to accept in their event the campaign loyalists of Marty Walsh." 

 "Crash Line Productions were threatened by functionaries of the mayor. The Allied War Veterans were threatened by the mayor himself. The pattern is identical—an abuse of power characterized by thuggish tactics to advance the political interests of the Walsh administration."

The League's call for a federal probe was reported in the Boston Herald and the New Boston Post.

Our Lady of Dolours

Tomorrow, September 15th, is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, or, as it was called in the traditional liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Seven Dolours of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Septem Dolorum Beatae Mariae Virginis). Each day of the year, faithful Catholics recite, in their morning prayers, in their Angelus, in their Rosary, and in the Leonine prayers after Low Mass, the Ave Maria of Saint Dominic — the Hail Mary.

On this day, however, it has been a pious custom to recite, while contemplating the Seven Dolours, the Ave Maria of Saint Bonaventure. It reads as follows:

Hail Mary, full of sorrows, Jesus crucified is with thee. Tearful art thou among women, and tearful is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus crucified, give tears to us, crucifiers of thy Son, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Seven Dolours are:

1. The prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25-35)

2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)

3. The Loss of the Child Jesus for three days in the Temple (Luke 2:41-50)

4. The Ascent of Calvary, the meeting of Our Lord and Our Lady on the Via Dolorosa (Luke 23:27-31; John, 19:17)

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Our Savior (John 19:25-30)

6. The body of Jesus is taken down from the Cross (Psalm 130; Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37)

7. Jesus is laid in the Tomb (Isaiah 53:8; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; Mark 15:40-47)

This devotion was revealed to Saint Bridget of Sweden. It commemorates the spiritual martyrdom of Our Lady, who stood at the foot of the Cross. The feast was extended to the entire Latin Church by Pope Saint Pius X.

Let us pray for the intercession of Our Lady, as Catholics stand at the foot of the Cross, while the Church—the Mystical Body of Christ—is crucified by the sins of its prelates and its priests.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

In response to a request for a comment from Mr. Bob Katzen, the Editor of Beacon Hill Roll Call, the Catholic Action League has issued the following statement:

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts is opposing the so-called “Gender X” bill—H.3664, An Act providing for a gender neutral designation on state documents and identifications—which would allow Massachusetts residents to arbitrarily alter everything from birth certificates to drivers licences to voter registration forms to reflect their gender preference.

A public hearing on the measure was held on September 10th by the Legislature’s Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight in Gardner Auditorium in the State House.

The Catholic Action League called the proposed law “a deranged idea, recklessly embraced without regard for societal harm or unpredictable consequences.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “Science, reason, common sense, natural law and millennia of human experience all tell us that there are only two biological sexes. Adriana Cohen is to commended for demanding that the violent totalitarian group Antifa be designated a terrorist organization, (Call Antifa what they are: domestic terrorists, 9/2/2019).

The disorders on August 31st were not the only recent episode of Antifa violence in Boston. On June 2nd on Boston Common at the March for Life—an event conducted peacefully for decades—masked Antifa thugs shouted down and assaulted speakers, stole a donation box and other items from a display table, and harassed, jostled, intimidated, spit at and verbally abused law abiding citizens, some of them elderly.

The Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U. S. Department of Justice needs to investigate Antifa for federal crimes related to constitutional rights violations. Here in Massachusetts, Attorney General Maura Healey must start to enforce Chapter 265, Section 37 of the General Laws, which prohibits intimidating or interfering with peaceful citizens in the free exercise of their constitutional rights.

District Court in Boston found that Kenneth Brissette, the city’s director of tourism, and Timothy Sullivan, chief of intergovernmental affairs, unlawfully pressured Crash Line Productions—the organizers of the festival—into hiring nine members of a stagehands union to satisfy Mayor Walsh, a former president of both Local 223 of the Laborers Union and the Metropolitan Boston Building and Construction Trades Council.

U. S. Attorney Andrew Lelling claimed that the defendants threatened to withhold municipal permits from festival organizers if they refused to hire union labor, a favored constituency and key interest group for the Walsh administration.

Given the striking parallels between the Boston Calling case and the South Boston Saint Patrick’s Day Parade controversy, the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts is calling upon the U. S. Attorney’s office to open an extortion probe into how the City of Boston coerced the Allied War Veterans Council into accepting another group of Walsh supporters, the LGBT organization OUTVETS, into the parade.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “With both the festival and the parade, the same strong arm tactics were used to accomplish the same political object. Threats were made to deny city permits if organizers refused to accede to city demands to accept in their event the campaign loyalists of Marty Walsh.”

“In the parade case, the threats were even more extreme. Parade organizers were told that the Boston Police might not be able to secure the perimeter of the parade and protect participants from violence. With the festival, illegal pressure was furtive and implied. With the parade, it was overt and aggressive, and included the notorious episode, where, at a public venue in Boston, Marty Walsh shouted threats and obscenities at parade adjutant Phil Wuschke.”

“Crash Line Productions were threatened by functionaries of the mayor. The Allied War Veterans were threatened by the mayor himself. The pattern is identical—an abuse of power characterized by thuggish tactics to advance the political interests of the Walsh administration. The U. S. Attorney’s office should investigate the corporate culture of unlawful coercion which exists within the upper echelons of the administration of Mayor Marty Walsh.”

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE DEFENDS PARENTAL RIGHTS AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

On May 4th, at the Annual Convention of the Massachusetts Medical Society, at the World Trade Center in Boston, the organization’s House of Delegates adopted a resolution entitled Ending non-medical vaccine exemption for school entrance, which stated: “The Massachusetts Medical Society opposes non-medical vaccine exemptions for school attendance and will advocate for legislation and regulation that ends non-medical vaccine exemptions for school attendance in Massachusetts.”

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts criticized the resolution, stating that the elimination of non-medical exemptions, meaning religious exemptions, for mandatory vaccination as a condition of school attendance would impede the right of parents to control the health care of their own children, empowering the state to intrude into the exclusive concerns of the family.

The League went on to say that the suppression of religious exemptions would also coerce the consciences and violate the religious liberty rights of Hasidic Jews, orthodox Catholics, and other pro-life citizens, who find the use of fetal tissue from aborted children, used in the production of various common vaccines, to be morally objectionable. Among the vaccines developed with fetal cells are several used to immunize children against mumps, measles, rubella and chickenpox. For Catholics, the League pointed out, participation in such vaccinations could be construed as materiel cooperation with evil.

Massachusetts State Representative Andres X. Vargas (D-Haverhill) has filed a bill—H. 3999, An Act Relative to Vaccinations and Public Health—to repeal religious exemptions. In a July 26th interview with Boston Herald reporter Alexi Cohan, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle stated, once again, that parents, not the state, should decide the health care of their children. Doyle also told Cohan that the American constitutional tradition held that the government should provide a reasonable accommodation to the sincerely held religious beliefs of its citizens.

Doyle’s comments, defending parental rights and religious freedom, were included in a Boston Herald story on July 27th.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE REBUTS MEDIA CLAIM THAT PRO-LIFERS LIED

On June 29th, GateHouse Media, the national publishing conglomerate which owns dozens of New England newspapers, issued an editorial rebuking the pro-life movement for pointing out that the recent, radical New York abortion law—the forerunner of the ROE Act in Massachusetts—would facilitate third trimester abortions.

The editorial said pro-life claims were false, and actually went on to make the fatuous argument that under the New York law, late term abortions would only be permitted if necessary “to protect the patient’s life or health.”

The editorial was circulated in several Massachusetts newspapers, including The Patriot Ledger, The MetroWest Daily News, and The Enterprise of Brockton.

In a July 1st letter to the editor, the Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle quoted the U. S. Supreme Court in Doe v. Bolton, the companion case of Roe v. Wade, which broadly defined a woman’s health to include “all factors--physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age--relevant to the well being of the patient.”

Doyle stated that any exception for a woman’s health would make make late term abortions, up to the moment of birth, effectively unrestricted, vindicating the claims of the pro-life movement.

The League’s letter was published, in its entirety, on July 6th, in The MetroWest Daily News, The Milford Daily News and The Patriot Ledger.

Dear Mr. McGrory,

I read with interest the Renee Graham column on Vice-President Mike Pence, which appeared in today’s print edition, and yesterday’s online edition, of the Globe.

The image of Mr. Pence by Lesley Becker would seem to convey the message that the Vice-President is a Roman Catholic. He is dressed in a black cassock with a Roman collar, with his hands opened in the manner of a priest engaged in liturgical prayer. His head is adorned with a miniaturized image of the dome of the U. S. Capitol, surmounted by a cross, which bears a striking resemblance to a papal tiara.

Mr. Pence is not a Catholic. He apostatized from Catholicism some years ago, defecting to an evangelical Protestant mega-church. It is only in the last paragraph of a thirteen paragraph article that Ms. Graham clearly identifies Mike Pence’s religion. An uninformed person, viewing his image, might conclude, erroneously, that he is a member of the Catholic Church, attempting to promote Catholic values in public life.

I have no way of knowing if Ms. Becker was unaware of Mr. Pence’s religious affiliation, or has some animus against Catholicism, or simply views Catholic symbols as a convenient generic representation of Christianity. Whatever the reason, Mr. Pence should not have been presented as a Catholic.

Lest you think that I am quibbling about a distinction without a difference, there are numerous and substantive divergences, in areas which impact public policy questions, between Catholics and Evangelicals. While there is some parallelism on certain issues of morality, there remain profound disagreements on everything from an understanding of social justice to just war doctrine to the ethics of contraception to the rights of minorities in Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Northern Ireland.

I hope the Globe will refrain in the future from implying that Mike Pence is a Catholic.

THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHER

On Independence Day, the Fourth of July, it is right and just, proper and salutary, for Americans to celebrate the birth of our nation by commemorating Thomas Jefferson and his great masterpiece, the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted 243 years ago today. We should also however, on this day, recall America’s forgotten founding father, the first founding father, the Patriot known to history as “The Father of American Independence,” Richard Henry Lee of Virginia.

It was Lee, a member of the Second Continental Congress from Virginia, who, on June 7, 1776, proposed a resolution on the floor of the Congress, which read:

“Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”

It was Lee’s motion which caused Congress to appoint a committee of five—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman—to draft a declaration promulgating American independence, a task which the committee entrusted to Jefferson. Lee’s resolution was finally passed by Congress on the second of July, 1776.

Two days later, on the “Glorious Fourth,” the language of the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Congress; two weeks later it was engrossed (written on parchment in clear hand); and on August 2 the engrossed copy was signed by most of the delegates. On the evening of July 4, Philadelphia printer John Dunlap printed hundreds of copies of the (unsigned, except by Hancock) Declaration text. These “Dunlap broadsides” were then distributed for public proclamation to the governments of the thirteen former colonies, to the Committees of Correspondence and to the Continental Army.

Richard Henry Lee and his brother and fellow Virginia delegate, Francis Lightfoot Lee, signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Richard went on to become the 6th President of the Continental Congress, one of the first two United States Senators from Virginia, and the second President Pro Tempore of the U. S. Senate. He died in 1794.

Lee’s family, a famous “First Family of Virginia,” arguably produced more statesman and military leaders than any other in our country’s history. In addition to Richard and Francis, three more Lee brothers were active in the Patriot cause. Thomas Ludwell Lee was a member of the Provincial Congress which instructed the Virginia delegates to support independence. William Lee served as a commercial agent and diplomatic commissioner for the Continental Congress in Europe during the War of Independence, and Dr. Arthur Lee, one of the American Commissioners to France, helped negotiate the Treaty of Alliance between the United States and King Louis XVI in 1778. He was later elected to Congress and appointed to the Treasury Board.

Richard Henry Lee’s first cousin, once removed, was Major General Henry, “Light Horse Harry” Lee, George Washington’s godson and eulogist—“first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” He served as one of Washington’s cavalry commanders in the Revolutionary War, and was his second in command during the Whiskey Rebellion. Light Horse Harry went on to become a member of the U. S. House of Representatives and the Governor of Virginia.

Another Lee cousin was Harry’s brother Charles Lee, a delegate to the Continental Congress who became the third Attorney General of the United States, and who served as U. S. Secretary of State ad interim in the Administration of President John Adams. A third brother was Congressman and federal judge Richard Bland Lee. President Zachary Taylor was a cousin of the Lees.

The most famous member of the Lee clan, of course, was Light Horse Harry’s son, a four star general who became the General-in-Chief of his government’s army in February of 1865—Robert Edward Lee.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE IN THE NEWS ON PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE, ROE ACT, TITLE X

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed on June 26th by the Editor of Beacon Hill Roll Call, Bob Katzen, on physician assisted suicide. On June 25th, there was a hearing in Gardner Auditorium in the State House on S.1208 and H.1926, An Act Relative To End Of Life Options, which would legalize the practice in the Commonwealth.

Doyle told Katzen that if enacted into law, the measure would replace a sanctity of life ethic with a quality of life ethic, would make doctors, in violation of the Hippocratic Oath, participants in the killing of their own patients, and would coerce the consciences of pharmacists, who would be compelled to fill prescriptions for life ending drugs. He also said that powerful health insurance companies, who already exercise a disproportionate influence over legislation and public policy, would now have a financial incentive to encourage the premature, self inflicted deaths of those for whom they provide coverage.

Doyle’s comment were included in stories in The Somerville News Weekly, The Somerville Times, Wicked Local Franklin, Wicked Local Medway, and Wicked Local Norfolk.

Doyle’s legislative testimony against the ROE Act, in which he stated it would “resurrect, in the context of failed abortions, the savage, archaic, and inhuman practice of infanticide through exposure,” was quoted in a Beacon Hill Roll Call story which appeared in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, The Falmouth Enterprise, the Greenfield Recorder, The Somerville News Weekly, Wicked Local Bellingham, Wicked Local Franklin, Wicked Local Medway, and Wicked Local Norfolk.

Doyle’s testimony was also quoted in these stories about another aspect of the bill: “Disturbingly, the suppression of the provisions for either parental or judicial consent for a minor seeking an abortion would not only expose young pregnant females to undue influence by irresponsible male partners looking to evade the burden of supporting a mother and child, but could place them in jeopardy of coercion at the hands of sexual predators, perhaps even by those who victimized them through the commission of statutory rape.”

Finally, Doyle’s criticism of Attorney General Maura Healey’s lawsuit against the Trump Administration over Title X funding and Planned Parenthood, in which Doyle said the suit “has more to do with political posturing than legal redress,” and was for Healey, “about serving a powerful special interest which has advanced her career in elective office,” was quoted in a story in the Athol Daily News.

The MetroWest Daily News editorial on abortion asserts that the recently passed law in New York “does not — as some of its opponents have claimed — permit full-term abortions under any circumstances,” (OUR VIEW: A nation divided over abortion, 6/29/2019).

The editorial went on to acknowledge that the New York law “does allow for abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy if doctors determine it is ‘...necessary to protect the patient’s life or health.’”

The U. S. Supreme Court, however, in Doe v. Bolton, the companion case to Roe v. Wade, broadly defined a woman’s health to include “all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age—relevant to the well being of the patient.”

Any laws therefore, like those recently passed in New York and Rhode Island, or like the one proposed in Massachusetts, which permits late term abortions based on a woman’s health, will mean that late term abortions will be, effectively, unrestricted.

“Granite One Health (of which CMC is the largest member) has proposed merging with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), which not only performs abortions but also trains doctors in how to do them. New Hampshire Right to Life believes this is a step in the wrong direction, as the merged entity, including budgets, would primarily be controlled by DHMC, which fundamentally differs on basics like who qualifies as a person and whether the Hippocratic oath (which prohibits abortion and euthanasia) should be followed. In addition, with less competition it is likely that health care costs in New Hampshire would go up, making more poor families choose between health care and other basic needs.”

“The Catholic Medical Center-Dartmouth Hitchcock merger signifies the toxic spread of the culture of death in our state.”

“We are praying that Catholic Medical Center returns to its stated core value, especially as it relates to unborn persons: ‘to treat others with compassion and to promote social justice and equality.’ We pray that Catholic Medical Center rethinks its attempted merger with entities that engage in atrocities like abortion.”

TO THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC HEALTH

My name is C. J. Doyle, and I am the Executive Director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts. The Catholic Action League wishes to be recorded in opposition to S.1208 and H.1926, An Act Relative To End Of Life Options.

For millennia, our civilization has believed that the only morally licit circumstances in which the taking of human life can be permitted are self defense, the prosecution of a just war, and the administration of justice—the latter two being related to the first. Like abortion, physician prescribed suicide represents a revolutionary departure in moral understanding and legal doctrine, rejecting the traditional consensus and substituting a changeable quality of life ethos for an inviolable sanctity of life standard.

This measure would deform the medical profession by making doctors participants in the killing of their patients, in violation of their Hippocratic Oath. It already seeks to deform medical ethics, and the English language, by describing lethal drugs as “medication.”

Powerful insurance companies, which already exercise a disproportionate influence on legislation and public policy, through their assets in lobbying, public relations and campaign finance, will have a financial incentive in the promotion of this practice.

It is unclear, if the opt-out provisions contained in Section 15 of the act would apply to pharmacists, who might find the requirement to fill prescriptions for life ending drugs to be morally objectionable. The absence of any provision for the notification of family members or next of kin is also, deeply troubling.

Under Section 6 of this proposed law, doctors would be required to lie on death certificates, falsely asserting that an underlying disease, not the ingestion of a deadly drug, was the cause of death. There are multiple examples of overt semantic dishonesty in this legislation. Section 14 of the act prohibits state agencies, in the compilation of reporting data, from using the terms “suicide” or “physician assisted suicide” in describing physician assisted suicide—“aid in dying” being the mandated alternative.

Section 14 further declares that when a person ends his or her life by taking a lethal drug, it “shall not constitute suicide,” and those health care professionals who facilitate this are not participating in “assisted suicide.” Incredibly, in a proposed law, the entire purpose of which is to legalize physician assisted suicide in the Commonwealth, Section 18 of the act actually states that “Nothing in this chapter may be construed to authorize a physician or any other individual to end a patient’s life by lethal injection, mercy killing, assisted suicide, or active euthanasia.”

Finally, in this matter, the “slippery slope” argument is compelling. In those states and other societies which have already legalized physician assisted suicide and its sibling, active voluntary euthanasia, the trend toward expansion has been consistent and, increasingly, apparent. Over time, there is a loosening of restrictions, a broadening of parameters, a relaxation of oversight, an increase in abuses, and a rise in the number of deaths.

I urge the Committee to give an unfavorable report to this reckless, dangerous and dishonest legislation.

Following the grotesquely dishonest coverage of the June 2nd Walk for Life by the Boston media, which obscured hate crimes against peaceful pro-life demonstrators by suggesting moral equivalence between masked Antifa thugs and their innocent victims, the Catholic Action League succeeded in securing the publication of a letter to the editor in the Boston Herald, on June 9th, which told the truth about the violence of that day. The League’s news release detailing the assault on pro-life citizens was also published, in its entirety, by The Boston Broadside on June 4th.

League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed on June 5th by reporter Alison Kuznitz of The Boston Globe, for a story on parental rights and religious exemptions in the matter of mandatory school vaccinations. Doyle’s comments were included in an article published on June 10th. Doyle’s remarks from a previous interview on this subject were also included in a story by Christian Wade in The Salem News on June 3rd.

Finally, on June 13th, Doyle was interviewed by host Mike Church on “The Mike Church Show” on The Veritas Radio Network. Doyle discussed the disturbing plans by the troubled Diocese of Manchester to merge that city’s Catholic Medical Center with the abortion performing—and abortionist training—Dartmouth Hitchcock Health, the Granite State’s leading perpetrator of abortions and sterilizations.

An Action Alert issued by the Friends of Saint Benedict Center on June 10th, urges pro-lifers to contact the Charitable Trusts Unit of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office (the New Hampshire equivalent of the Massachusetts Public Charities Division), which must approve the merger, and which blocked a previous merger attempt in 2010.

OPPOSE PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE AT STATE HOUSE HEARING TUESDAY!

On Tuesday, June 25th, the Joint Committee on Public Health of the Massachusetts General Court will hold a public hearing on a proposed law to legalize physician prescribed suicide in the Commonwealth—S.1208 and H.1926, An Act Relative To End Of Life Options. The hearing will be held in Gardner Auditorium in the State House from 11am to 5pm.

This malign measure would not only corrupt the medical profession, make doctors accomplices in—and perhaps even promoters of—suicide, and make health care institutions venues for killing, rather than treating patients, but it would pave the way for active euthanasia. With an Orwellian manipulation of language, the legislation refers to lethal poison as “medication.” Doctors would be required to lie on death certificates, falsely asserting that an underlying disease, not the ingestion of poison, was the cause of death.

The proposed law has no requirement for the notification of family or next of kin, no conscience clause for physicians and pharmacists, and no religious exemption for Church affiliated institutions. Powerful insurance companies would have a financial incentive in the death of patients. It is fraught with peril. If enacted into law, this legislation’s potential for abuse is staggering.

Please attend the hearing on Tuesday, and please contact the members of the Public Health Committee, and urge them to reject this reckless and pernicious proposal.

My name is C. J. Doyle and I am the Executive Director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.

The Catholic Action League wishes to be recorded in opposition to the proposed ROE Act—S.1209 An Act to Remove Obstacles and Expand Abortion Access, and H.3320 An Act Removing Obstacles and Expanding Access to Women’s Reproductive Health.

By repealing Section 12p of Chapter 112 of the General Laws, which requires physicians to take “reasonable steps...to preserve the life and health of the aborted child,” this measure would resurrect, at least in the context of failed abortions, the savage, archaic and inhuman practice of infanticide through exposure.

By lowering the medical standard for abortions after 24 weeks, and abandoning the mandate that such procedures be conducted in hospitals—by repealing Sections 12m and 12q of Chapter 112—ROE would maximize the ease and convenience of third trimester abortions, and endanger women seeking abortions.

Disturbingly, the suppression of the provisions for either parental or judicial consent for a minor seeking an abortion, contained in Section 12s of Chapter 112, would not only expose young pregnant females to undue influence by irresponsible male partners looking to evade the burden of supporting a mother and child, but could place them in jeopardy of coercion at the hands of sexual predators, perhaps even by those who victimized them through the commission of statutory rape.

Although presented as the codification of Roe v. Wade in Massachusetts law, the proposed ROE Act far exceeds the language and findings of that U. S. Supreme Court decision, by abolishing any state interest in the regulation or limitation of abortion. If this improvident measure is enacted into law, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would have one of the most permissive and dangerous abortion regimes in the world.

The Catholic Action League also wishes to be recorded in favor of H.3322—An Act Relative to Unborn Children, which seeks to mitigate the pain experienced by unborn children during an abortion; H.3428—An Act Relative to Coerced Abortion, which is intended to ensure that elective abortions are voluntary; H.3429—An Act Relative to a Woman’s Right to Know, which is a proposed informed consent law; and H.3434—An Act Relative to Sex Selection in Pregnancy, which would prohibit abortions sought solely on the basis of sex selection.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CONDEMNS ROE ACT AS INFANTICIDE

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today condemned the proposed ROE Act, which is now being considered by the Bay State’s Legislature. ROE would eliminate all remaining restrictions on abortion in Massachusetts, loosen the medical criteria for third trimester abortions in the Commonwealth, and remove the requirement that physicians protect the life of a baby born alive during an abortion, effectively legalizing, in the context of failed abortions, infanticide in the state.

A public hearing on the measure, before the Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Judiciary, began this afternoon at 1pm in Gardner Auditorium in the State House.

The Catholic Action League called the proposed legislation “regressive, barbarous and cruel.”

In written testimony submitted to the Judiciary Committee, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. DR. PHILIP T. CROTTY, JR. R.I.P.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Professor Philip T. Crotty, Jr., who died on June 8th, at the age of 89. A devout Catholic and a daily communicant, Phil Crotty was one of the original members of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, and continued his support of the League for the last twenty-four years.

Born in New York City, Phil Crotty lived much of life in the Brighton District of Boston. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, and a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War, he received a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University, a Master of Science degree from Oxford University, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Boston University, where he went on to receive his doctorate in education. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from Northeastern University.

In a long career at Northeastern, Phil Crotty served as both Professor of Management and Dean of the university’s College of Business Administration. He also served as Northeastern’s Acting Provost, Vice-President of University Administration, and Vice-President of Academic Administration.

An appointee of the Commonwealth’s great pro-life Governor, Edward J. King, Phil Crotty was, during the King Administration, a member of the Governor’s Management Task Force, and served on the Advisory Committee of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

A Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Phil Crotty was a supporter of such Catholic institutions as the Cardinal Cushing School in Hanover and Christendom College in Virginia. He is survived by twenty Godchildren and numerous cousins and friends.

A member of the Congregation of Saint Athanasius, Phil Crotty will be waked in Saint Lawrence Church, at 774 Boylston Street on Route 9 in Chestnut Hill, on Tuesday, June 18th, from 4 to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Church on Wednesday, June 19th, at 10am. Interment will be at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline.

PUBLIC HEARING ON ROE ACT

On Monday, June 17th, the Joint Committee on the Judiciary of the Massachusetts Legislature will hold a hearing soliciting public testimony on the proposed ROE Act: S.1209—An act to remove obstacles and expand abortion access, and H.3320—An act removing obstacles and expanding access to women’s reproductive health.

The hearing will be held in the Gardner Auditorium in the State House in Boston, beginning at 1:00 pm. It will be preceded by a rally of pro-life groups in front of the State House at 10:00 am.

This barbarous measure would sweep away all remaining restrictions on abortion in Massachusetts, would maximize the ease and convenience of third trimester child killing, would endanger women seeking abortions, and would resurrect the hideous, pagan, pre-Christian practice of infanticide through exposure by denying legal protection to infants who survived botched abortions.

In the habitually dishonest propaganda of its proponents, the ROE Act is marketed as an attempt to uphold Roe v. Wade. In fact, it goes far beyond that unjust, contrived and catastrophic Supreme Court decision, by descending into the Luciferian realm of abortion absolutism. ROE would prohibit any government regulation, whatsoever, of the slaughter of the unborn.

Please come and testify Monday at the State House. Even if you cannot testify, your attendance at the public hearing Monday would strengthen the pro-life presence and impress upon legislators the intensity of opposition to this demonic aggression against the innocent, and against Divine and natural law.

AN HISTORICAL REMEMBRANCE

Today, June 6, 2019, is the seventy-fifth anniversary of Operation Overlord—the Allied invasion of Nazi occupied Fortress Europe. The D-Day landings on the coast of Normandy brought about the liberation of France and the Low countries, the defeat and destruction of the Third Reich, and the end of the Second World War in the European Theater.

While tributes are, appropriately, being paid to the heroic sacrifices which were made by brave American and British soldiers, sailors, and airmen on that momentous day, one aspect of this great drama has been, for decades, overlooked by government, popular culture, the news media, and Hollywood.

There were five invasion beaches in Normandy. Two, Omaha and Utah, were American. Two, Sword and Gold, were British. The fifth beach, Juno, was Canadian. Of the 24,000 Allied paratroopers who were dropped behind the beaches before the assault, this force also consisted of American, British and Canadian troops.

The Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force contributed 110 ships and fifteen squadrons of aircraft to the invasion forces.

It was not just, therefore, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but the Dominion of Canada, which was responsible for the success of D-Day.

Let us remember, therefore, all of the courageous men, American, British, and Canadian, and many others—Free French, Belgians, Dutch, Poles, and more—who fought and died on June 6, 1944.

This writer’s maternal grandmother was born in Carbonear, in what was then the Crown Colony of Newfoundland, which became the tenth province of the Canadian Confederation in 1949.

Canada is blessed with a rather elegant national anthem, O Canada, and has an equally beautiful traditional national hymn, The Maple Leaf Forever, which is associated with the resplendent old Canadian flag, the Canadian Red Ensign.

Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin stated nothing surprising, unwarranted or inaccurate when he cautioned that the practice of the Catholic Faith is incompatible with the celebration of homosexual pride, (Rhode Island bishop: Catholics should not support Pride Month, 6/3/2019).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Pope Saint John Paul II, characterizes homosexual behavior as “grave depravity.” If a Catholic bishop cannot articulate, in a low key, matter of fact way, the perennial moral teachings of his Church, without provoking protests in front of his cathedral and condemnations from the mayor of his city and the governor of his state, then freedom of religion is becoming academic in this country.

When activists stage a noisy demonstration, with bull horns and raised fists, on the steps of a church on Sunday, with congregants worshiping inside, one can draw a conclusion about the identity of the real bigots and haters.

The Boston Herald story on the illegal disruption of the March for Life in Boston reported that the “demonstration turned violent,” (Seven arrested as March for Life turns violent, 6/3/2019).

It would be more accurate to state that the demonstration was the object of violence by masked, Antifa-style thugs who invaded the march and harassed, assaulted and intimidated peaceful, law abiding pro-life citizens trying to exercise their constitutional rights.

Innocent people, some of them elderly, were surrounded, shoved, spat upon, splashed with liquids, and subjected to a torrent of obscenities and invectives. Participants in the march were unable to hear the speeches because fanatics with bullhorns drowned them out.

There was no morally equivalent “clash” of protesters. One side had blameless, unoffending victims, while the other side had aggressive, violent, criminal assailants.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON PRO-LIFERS, COVER-UP BY BOSTON MEDIA, FAILURE BY BOSTON POLICE

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today condemned the violent assault on peaceful, law abiding pro-life citizens perpetrated, Sunday, by left wing extremists on Boston Common. The League also denounced the attempt by the Boston news media to impute moral equivalence between innocent victims and criminal assailants, and criticized the Boston Police Department for failing to defend the free speech rights of those engaged in a legal demonstration.

The March for Life—sponsored by Massachusetts Citizens For Life—has occurred annually, without incident, for nearly three decades. Proceeds from the march are used to fund local organizations dedicated to supporting the physical and emotional needs of pregnant women and children in crisis. The march is characterized by the recitation of prayers, the singing of hymns, and the delivery of speeches from the Parkman bandstand on Boston Common, the use of which is secured by the issuance of a permit from the City of Boston.

On Sunday, June 2nd, the march was invaded by a mob of thirty or more Antifa style thugs bent on disrupting the event and harassing and intimidating participants. Many wore bandana face masks. Two were carrying bull horns. Pro-lifers were subjected to a torrent of obscene gestures and verbal abuse, including profanities, taunts, expletives and invectives. Speakers on the bandstand were drowned out by the bullhorns and by the shouts of the mob.

There was also physical violence. At least two persons—one of them a woman—were pushed, at least two were spit upon, and at least two had drinks thrown at them. One person had urine thrown on him, while another was surrounded by a mob of masked men and had a bullhorn directed in his face.

The Boston Police responded to some acts of violence by making seven arrests and clearing members of the mob from the bandstand, but did not protect the First Amendment rights of march participants, many of whom could not hear the speakers because of the noisy disruption tactics of the mob. Section 37 of Chapter 265 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth prohibits interfering with or intimidating anyone in the exercise of their constitutional rights, such as free speech, the freedom of assembly, or the free exercise of religion, all of which were impeded last Sunday on Boston Common. None of those arrested, however, were so charged.

A news story on the march in The Boston Globe referred to “skirmishes” between equal numbers of “protesters” and “counter-protesters,” who “clashed.” Globe reporter Aimee Ortiz accused pro-lifers of trying to “drown out the opposition,” and claimed “It was not clear which side those arrested belonged to,” an assertion contradicted by the photographs in the Globe’s own story.

A Boston Herald article not only repeated the same misdirecting falsehood about a “clash,” but ran, as a headline, “...March for Life turns violent.” Television news reports on WBZ-CBS Boston, WHDH TV, WFXT TV, and New England Cable News all followed the same narrative about “clashes” and “confrontations.” An article in Boston Magazine listed the charges against those arrested, including assault and battery on a person over sixty, but still insisted “It was not clear whether those arrested were affiliated with either the pro-choice or pro-life demonstrators.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “On June 2nd on Boston Common, a Marxist mob of totalitarian thugs perpetrated acts of physical violence against innocent Christians to deprive them of their constitutional rights. This was met by an underwhelming response from the Boston Police, who have a history, dating back to the 1990’s, of working to rule when it comes to left wing assaults against Catholics.”

“All of this was compounded by the grotesque dishonesty of the Boston media, who deliberately obscured the facts, by refusing to draw a distinction between victims and aggressors, leaving the public with the false impression that both sides were responsible for incidents of violence, and that peaceful pro-life citizens were engaged in confrontational behavior.”

As of this morning, neither the Archdiocese of Boston, nor the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, have issued any statement condemning the violence, which was directed at the supporters of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church, most of whom were practicing Catholics.

The letter to the editor from the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, denouncing two deans from the Jesuit administered College of the Holy Cross, for publicly rebuking the Bishop of Worcester, the Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, was published, in its entirety, in the Sunday, May 26th, edition of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The two dissenters from Catholic doctrine—who collect paychecks from Catholic institutions—were angry that the bishop stated, accurately, that so-called gender ideology was irreconcilable with Christian anthropology and Catholic moral theology, and that those Catholic institutions which embraced this error endangered their Catholic identity.

On Saturday, May 25th, the letter to the editor from the Catholic Action League exposing the continuing hypocrisy of the bigoted, mendacious, Catholic hating Margery Eagan, was published in The Boston Globe. League Executive Director C. J. Doyle revealed that Eagan, who claims to be Catholic, readily resorts to the familiar talking points of Planned Parenthood and to the old, anti-Catholic narrative of NARAL Pro-Choice America, whenever writing about abortion.

Finally, in an interview with Editor Bob Katzen of Beacon Hill Roll Call, Doyle pointed out that Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s latest lawsuit against the Trump Administration over abortion was one more example of Healey’s complete and utter subservience to Planned Parenthood, whose endorsement of her candidacy she once described as a “game changer for our campaign.” Doyle’s comments were quoted in stories in The Somerville News Weekly and the Taunton Daily Gazette.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CRITICIZES BC LAW FOR HONORING REP. ROBERT C. SCOTT

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized Jesuit administered Boston College Law School for presenting as its commencement speaker U. S. Representative Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA). Commencement Exercises were conducted this morning at Conte Forum at Boston College.

In his twenty-six years in Congress, Scott has been an unremitting opponent of Catholic moral teaching, the right to life, and the religious freedom rights of Catholic institutions and the Catholic community. Since first entering the U. S. House of Representatives in 1993, Scott has received successive annual ratings of 100% from both the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Scott is a proponent of legal abortion, the public funding of abortion, partial birth abortion, contraception, embryonic stem cell research, cloning, and family planning as part of U. S. foreign aid. He is opposed to any restrictions on abortion, to “Born Alive” legislation, (which would protect children who survived abortions), and to laws which would punish offenders who harmed an unborn child during the commission of a crime.

In the 2016 U. S. Supreme Court case Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged v. Burwell, Scott filed an amicus brief opposing the Catholic nuns who sought a religious exemption from the Obamacare mandate requiring them to provide contraceptives, sterilizations and abortifacients as part of employee health coverage.

In 2019, Scott became a co-sponsor of the “Do No Harm” Act, which would amend the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to compel Christian business owners and professionals to service same sex ceremonies. On May 17th, Scott voted for the “Equality Act,” which would further restrict the scope of the RFRA, and which would make sexual orientation and gender identity part of federal civil rights law.

In 2003, the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops authorized the statement Catholics in Political Life, which said “the Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

Today’s graduation was the ninth time in the last ten years that BC Law hosted a supporter of Roe v. Wade as a commencement speaker. Previous speakers since 2010 have included U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA); Massachusetts Chief Justice Roderick Ireland; Mrs. Victoria Kennedy; U.S. Senator Mo Cowan (D-MA); Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy; Obama Political Strategy Director David Simas; U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH); and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Geraldine Hines.

The Catholic Action League called Scott’s selection as commencement speaker “a shameless betrayal of Catholic morality, a contumacious violation of Catholics in Political Life, and a callous insult to the faithful Catholics who support and defend the right to life.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle stated: “For decades now, conservative Catholics have characterized the selection of public figures like Bobby Scott as commencement speakers at Catholic institutions as acts of dissent against the Magisterium. Given nine such selections in the last ten years, it might be more accurate to call this selection an affirmation of the secular, post-Christian orthodoxy of BC Law, with its rejectionist view of Catholic moral principles.”

“Boston College Law School is a de-Christianized institution whose Catholic identity is merely nominal and increasingly fraudulent. Much of the responsibility for this state of affairs rests with the Archbishop of Boston, who, it would seem, only addresses these scandals when embarrassed into doing so.”

Boston College Law School was not the only Catholic institution of higher learning in Massachusetts to honor an opponent of Catholic moral teachings in 2019. Regis College, founded and administered by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Lawrence Mayor and longtime Democratic Party activist Dan Rivera during commencement exercises on May 11th.

PRO-LIFE GROUPS CRITICIZE MAURA HEALEY FOR TITLE X LAWSUIT

Today, the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts and Irish Pro-Life USA criticized Bay State Attorney General Maura Healey for joining a lawsuit against the Administration of President Donald J. Trump, to halt revisions in federal funding formulas for Title X family planning dollars.

C. J. Doyle and John Aidan Byrne made the following statement: “The intention of the Trump Administration in implementing regulatory changes in the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services is to bring the disbursement formulas for family planning dollars into full compliance with Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970, which states that “None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

“Under these changes, federally funded family planning organizations would not be permitted to engage in abortion referrals as part of family planning, and would be required to separate, physically and financially, abortion facilities from family planning services. Sadly, the Trump Administration changes do not go as far as those implemented by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, which also prohibited abortion counseling.”

“As a consequence of these regulatory revisions, nearly $60 million in federal tax monies would be redirected away from abortion giant Planned Parenthood. Now, for the first time, faith based groups will be able to receive Title X funds, as abortion referral and counseling would no longer be required as a condition of eligibility.”

“Healey’s lawsuit has more to do with political posturing than legal redress. The Attorney General knows fully well that in 1991 the U. S. Supreme Court, in Rust v. Sullivan, upheld the right of the Reagan Administration to enact the very same compliance integrity measures now prescribed by the Trump Administration.”

IRISH DIASPORA URGES IRELAND TO VOTE PRO-LIFE IN FRIDAY ELECTIONS

On Friday, May 24th, voters in the Republic of Ireland will elect thirteen members to the European Parliament, along with 949 county and corporation councilors in thirty-one local authorities.

Irish Pro-Life USA and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts are urging Irish citizens, at home and abroad, to vote pro-life. Irish Pro-Life USA has issued the following statement:

Irish Pro-Life USA, a grassroots organization in America of pro-life friends of Ireland — including Irish born living in the US — is urging family, friends and the people of Ireland to vote for pro-life, anti-abortion candidates in the local and European elections back home this Friday, May 24.

John Aidan Byrne, President of Irish Pro-Life USA, made the following comment:“Forty-six years after Roe v. Wade here in the United States, we have witnessed the shocking and tragic legacy of that Supreme Court decision, which, as in Ireland today, was promoted by early advocates on compassionate grounds. Sadly, more than 63 million abortions nationwide is the direct result in America. In Ireland, early estimates indicate that 800-900 abortions are being performed each month in Ireland under the new abortion law, also introduced on so-called compassionate grounds.”

On another front, the pro-life Irish diaspora in America — and worldwide — are concerned at proposals by the Irish government to fund abortion in developing countries. “Ireland has a long history of sending missionaries and lay volunteers abroad to help and assist with the needs of people suffering hardships and persecution. Funding abortion is morally repugnant, threatens the lives of the unborn, mothers and families — and dishonors a noble Irish tradition. On Monday, May 20th, C. J. Doyle, Executive Director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, was interviewed by New Orleans based internet radio host Mike Church, on “The Mike Church Show,” on the Crusade Channel of the Veritas Radio Network.

In his interview with Church, Doyle discussed the dangerous threat to religious freedom posed by the so-called Equality Act—HR 5---which was passed last Friday, May 17th, by the U. S. House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA). This extremist measure would make sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes in U. S. civil rights legislation.

Church also asked Doyle about the obscene and sacrilegious rap video shot in the nave and sanctuary of Saint Peter's Church in Worcester, which called for the death of President Trump, and about the decision of the Massachusetts Medical Society to oppose religious exemptions for parents concerned about the vaccination of their children.

Worcester Bishop Robert McManus merely stated the obvious when he pointed out the incompatibility between Catholicism and gender ideology, (Bishop’s remarks on transgenderism ‘hurtful, offensive,’ Holy Cross deans say, 5/19/2019).

The criticism directed against the bishop by two Deans from the College of the Holy Cross opens a new dimension in the concept of chutzpah. Two persons holding leadership positions in a Catholic institution—while openly opposing Catholic beliefs—actually believe themselves entitled to publicly rebuke the local bishop for affirming what Catholics have always believed. The audacity is astonishing.

While Bishop McManus should be commended for telling the truth, and while the decay of Holy Cross as a Catholic institution began long before his tenure as bishop, it must be acknowledged that the decline of the college's Catholic identity has continued and accelerated in the fifteen years since he became Bishop of Worcester.

In her latest column criticizing the Catholicism, Margery Eagan claims that she is not attacking the Catholic position on abortion, but is only assailing the tactics of the Church in opposing the ROE Act in Massachusetts, (The church’s dismaying anti-abortion rhetoric, 5/17/2019).

This assertion is unpersuasive. Diversionary arguments about secondary issues notwithstanding, it is, precisely, the Catholic belief in the right to life of the unborn, which remains the enduring object of Eagan’s unrelenting hostility. Given the extremism of ROE, it is hardly surprising that Eagan would want to change the terms of the debate from the content of the legislation to the old NARAL narrative about the impositions of the Catholic hierarchy.

When it comes to abortion, Eagan identifies as Catholic—albeit one who is always about to leave the Church—but readily resorts to the familiar talking points of Planned Parenthood, as when she quoted Representative Patricia Haddad about “Shaming women.”

Eagan was inaccurate when she wrote that third trimester abortions are illegal in Massachusetts. Section 12M of Chapter 112 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth permits abortions after 24 weeks “if it is necessary to save the life of the mother, or if a continuation of her pregnancy will impose on her a substantial risk of grave impairment of her physical or mental health.”

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE STATEMENT ON MMA OPPOSITION TO PARENTAL RIGHTS

On Friday, May 10th, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed by Christian Wade, State House Bureau Chief of the North of Boston Media Group on the recent decision of the Massachusetts Medical Society to oppose the right of parents to invoke sincerely held religious beliefs in seeking exemptions for their children from mandatory school vaccination programs.

On May 4th, at the Annual Convention of the Massachusetts Medical Society, at the World Trade Center in Boston, the organization’s House of Delegates adopted a resolution entitled Ending non-medical vaccine exemption for school entrance, which stated: “The Massachusetts Medical Society opposes non-medical vaccine exemptions for school attendance and will advocate for legislation and regulation that ends non-medical vaccine exemptions for school attendance in Massachusetts.”

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts issued the following statement: “The Massachusetts Medical Society has made it clear that it intends to use the power of law, and executive regulatory authority, to enforce social compliance with its public policy positions. Should it succeed—eliminating non-medical exemptions, meaning religious exemptions—for mandatory vaccination as a condition of school attendance, such legislation would impede the right of parents to control the health care of their own children, empowering the state to intrude into the exclusive concerns of the family.”

“It would also coerce the consciences and violate the religious freedom rights of Hasidic Jews, orthodox Catholics, and other pro-life citizens, who find the use of fetal tissue from aborted children, used in the production of various common vaccines, to be morally objectionable. Among the vaccines developed with fetal cells are several used to immunize children against mumps, measles, rubella and chickenpox. For Catholics, participation in such vaccinations could be construed as materiel cooperation with evil.”

“The jurisprudence of both the United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have long understood the free exercise of religion to mean not just the freedom to worship, but the right to act in accordance with a religiously formed conscience. This principle was upheld by the Supreme Judicial Court as recently as 1995 in the Desilets case, in which Justice Wilkins, writing for the majority said, ‘Conduct motivated by sincerely held religious convictions will be recognized as the exercise of religion.’”

Doyle’s comments were included in news stories published in The Salem News, the Gloucester Daily Times, the Eagle Tribune of Lawrence and The Daily News of Newburyport.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CRITICIZES WORCESTER CHURCH FOR HOSTING VIOLENT AND OBSCENE ANTI-TRUMP RAP VIDEO

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized Saint Peter’s Catholic Parish in Worcester for allowing the sanctuary and the nave of that church to be used in the filming of a vulgar rap video which sends the message that President Donald Trump and Fox News commentators Laura Ingraham and Tomi Lahren deserve to die. Ingraham, a convert to the Catholic Faith, is known as an orthodox, practicing, pro-life Catholic.

In the video, “Devil’s Work,” local rapper Joyner Lucas, while holding a Bible in one hand and swigging a bottle of Hennessy’s cognac in the other, complains to God about the death of various African American figures—including extremist Malcolm X—and calls upon God to take the lives of Trump, Ingraham and Lahren, referring to the latter two as “stupid hoes.” Inside the sanctuary, next to the paschal candle, the video displays a funeral easel with a photograph of the President of the United States. Throughout the video, Joyner repeatedly intersperses the “F word” with images of the crucifix and of Our Lady.

In an interview with the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester, the pastor of Saint Peter’s, Msgr. Francis Scollen, said, “I know nothing about rap music at all,” and “We can’t endorse violence,” adding that he would not permit the church to be used in the future for rap videos.

Scollen declined however, to either apologize to the President, Ingraham and Lahren, or to unequivocally condemn the video, some aspects of which he said “seemed positive.” In an interview with CBS Boston, Scollen acknowledged “...I guess it offended some people.” He went on to say “Maybe if we had known more about what was happening here, we would have probably put more controls on it,” adding “We need to bring about social change but we need to do it in a non-violent way.”

The Catholic Action League is calling the decision to allow Saint Peter’s to be used in the production of a rap video “reckless, incomprehensible and bizarre.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “Rap music is characterized by obscenity, vulgarity, misogyny, appeals to prurient interest and the celebration of violence. Who, in their right mind, would allow a Catholic church, with the Blessed Sacrament present in the tabernacle, to be profaned by such blasphemy, exploitation and coarse indecency?”

“What is it about the post-conciliar Church that makes it so radically dysfunctional at every level? The Church has enough problems of its own without inviting the corruption of secular society into its sanctuaries. The Diocese of Worcester should make reparation for this sacrilege, apologize to both its own parishioners and the targets of this video, and require an accounting from the pastor of Saint Peter’s for this irresponsible and unfathomable decision.”

C. J. DOYLE INTERVIEWED ON ROE ACT AND TITLE X

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed on April 15th, by radio host Mike Church on The Mike Church Show on the Veritas Radio Network. Doyle described the lethal consequences of the barbaric ROE Act, now before the Massachusetts Legislature, which he said would “maximize the ease and convenience of child killing in the Commonwealth.”

On April 26th, Doyle was interviewed by reporter Christian Wade, State House Bureau Chief of the North of Boston Media Group, on the decision of an Obama appointed federal district judge to impose a nationwide injunction against the Trump Administration on behalf of Planned Parenthood. Trump was about to implement Title X regulatory changes to bring funding formulas into compliance with the Public Health Service Act of 1970, which prohibited the use of federal tax dollars for abortion. Doyle said the judge’s ruling was “an abuse of office, a violation of the separation of powers, and a usurpation of the right of the elected executive branch to enforce the law.” Doyle’s remarks were published in stories in The Salem News, the Eagle Tribune of Lawrence and the Gloucester Daily Times.

Doyle’s March 23rd interview with Greg Wayland for From the Housetops Catholic Media, is now available on line. During the program, Doyle, in the context of the proposed ROE Act, described how, in less than one generation, a Catholic majority Legislature in a once Catholic majority state went from a principled defense of innocent human life to toadying subservience to Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

The two episodes of Close to Home with Molly Finn on Worcester’s WCCA-TV, in which Doyle examined the implications of the ROE Act, and detailed the efforts by the troubled Diocese of Manchester to close down the Saint Benedict Center and Immaculate Heart of Mary School, are also now available online.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE RAPS INJUNCTION AGAINST TITLE X COMPLIANCE

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is criticizing a lower court judge for blocking the Trump Administration from restoring Ronald Reagan era reforms in the disbursement of Title X family planning dollars. U. S. District Court Judge Stanley A. Bastion—a Barack Obama appointee—issued a nationwide injunction yesterday barring the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services from implementing regulatory changes intended to bring federal funding formulas into full compliance with Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970.

That legislation states, “None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.” The regulatory revisions would have revived the Reagan Administration’s prohibition against abortion referrals and would have mandated a physical and financial separation between so-called family planning services and facilities which perform abortions.

The new regulations, which were to take effect on May 3rd, would have stripped nearly $60 million from the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

The Catholic Action League is calling the judge’s decision “more unconstitutional overreach by a partisan, politicized and ideologically invested judiciary.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “Stanley Bastion’s decision contravenes a 1991 ruling by the U. S. Supreme Court, which in Rust v. Sullivan, upheld the right of the Reagan Administration to enact the very same compliance integrity measures prescribed by the Trump Administration.”

“When the First Congress passed, and President George Washington signed into law, the Judiciary Act of 1789, establishing the federal court system, no one envisioned national government by lower court injunction. For all his legal misdirection, Bastion makes clear in his decision that he objects to the new regulations as a matter of public policy.”

“Bastion’s ruling is an abuse of office, a violation of the separation of powers, and a usurpation of the right of the elected executive branch to enforce the law. Reduced to its essentials, the key fact of this ruling is that a judicial appointee of America’s most pro-abortion President has misappropriated his authority to compel taxpayers to continue subsidizing Planned Parenthood.”

Lisa Kashinsky’s article on Cardinal O’Malley’s criticism of the ROE Act suggested that, under current law, a woman could only obtain a late term abortion in Massachusetts if her life were endangered (O’Malley slams abortion bill, 4/7/2019).

That is not so. The General Laws of the Commonwealth permit abortions in the Bay State after 24 weeks if the pregnancy would impose a “substantial risk of grave impairment of [a woman’s] physical or mental health.” Mental health is interpreted broadly.

The ROE Act would lower the standard by allowing abortions after 24 weeks to protect a woman’s “physical or mental health,” and would empower the abortionist, when citing mental health concerns, to consider the woman’s age, family circumstances, and various emotional and psychological factors.

If enacted, the ROE Act will not only eliminate all remaining restrictions on surgical abortions, but will maximize the ease and convenience of late term abortions in Massachusetts, and deny children who survive abortions the protection of law.

REV. CHARLES S. MACISAAC, RIP

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Reverend Charles Stanley MacIsaac, O.S., who entered into eternal life on March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Stanley, 90, was a priest of the Society of the Oblates of Wisdom. A late vocation to the priesthood, he was ordained by Pope Saint John Paul II.

Father Stanley, a faithful, pious and orthodox priest, was the brother of the late John J. MacIsaac, one of the founding directors of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts. His other sibling was Brother Hugh MacIsaac, MICM, the Superior—and Second Founder—of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Father Stanley was a longtime friend of the League, and was the last priest for whom this writer had the privilege of serving Mass. At the time of his death, he was under the care of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate at the Mount Saint Francis Hermitage in Endicott, New York. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Elena MacIsaac, and by nephews and nieces in the Greater Boston area.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Stanley will be celebrated on Friday, April 5th, at 11:00 am, at Most Holy Rosary Parish in the Town of Maine, New York. There will be a brief wake at the church, beginning an hour before Mass.

On March 23rd, the distinguished Boston journalist and veteran television and radio reporter Greg Wayland interviewed Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle for two segments of programming for From The Housetops Media. The interview will be broadcast, on the first weekend in April, on the EWTN affiliate, 89.3 FM, WQPH Radio, Fitchburg, and will be available on-line in the Multimedia section of the Saint Benedict Center website.

Doyle said the proposed ROE Act, now before the Massachusetts Legislature, would “maximize the speed and convenience of child killing,” by eliminating the remaining restrictions on abortion, and by broadening the medical justification and reducing the paperwork required for late term abortions.

On Trump Administration changes to federal Title X funding, Doyle explained that this issue originated with U. S. Government funding of birth control, which began at the end the Eisenhower Administration, accelerated under the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, and reached its culmination during the Administration of President Richard Nixon, with Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970.

Doyle commended President Donald J. Trump for revising U. S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations to bring disbursement practises into full compliance with the clear statutory prohibition of the Act, which states “None of the funds appropriated under this Act shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.” Trump’s executive order will cut nearly $60 million, annually, in federal funds from America’s assembly line, mass production, giant, industrial scale death factory, Planned Parenthood.

When asked by Wayland how a Legislature with a nominally Catholic majority could countenance something as extreme as the ROE Act, Doyle responded by recalling the old maxim that “politics is generational.” Doyle pointed out that a previous generation of dedicated pro-life Bay State legislators, such as William M. Bulger, (who prevented an earlier effort to codify Roe in the Massachusetts Constitution), James J. Craven, Charles R. Doyle, Michael Paul Feeney and Raymond L. Flynn, were pre-conciliar in their Catholic formation.

The current generation of Catholics in the Legislature, many of them the graduates of Catholic schools, colleges and universities, were formed by the post-conciliar Church, and have conformed, entirely, to the dominant secular culture. As the Catholic Action League documented in its detailed August, 2015 analysis of the General Court, Catholic legislators who attended Catholic schools were, actually, more likely to support Planned Parenthood than those who attended public or private schools.

IRISH CONSULATE TURNS AWAY PRO-LIFERS

Our good friends, longtime allies, and brave champions of the unborn at Irish Pro-Life USA—headed by the dedicated John Aidan Byrne of New Jersey—were turned down by the Consulate of the Republic of Ireland in New York, when, as so many other groups have before, they requested the use of consulate facilities for an Irish cultural event. This event, however, would have celebrated Irish America’s pro-life heritage, something now officially scorned by the fanatically pro-abortion government of homosexual Prime Minister Leo Varadadkar.

Abortion must now not only be legal, unrestricted, and publicly funded in Ireland, but Catholic hospitals must collaborate in the murder of the innocent, and physicians who refuse to perform abortions cannot refuse, legally, to refer abortions. Legislation for censorship zones outside of abortuaries is being readied for use against pro-lifers. Post Christian Ireland’s descent into the abyss continues and accelerates.

New York’s Irish Consulate Rejects Application By Group to Host Event Honoring Pro-Life Heritage & Contributions of Irish-Americans

Organizers Call Consulate “Tax-Payer-Funded, Pro-Abortion, Increasingly Secular PC Outpost of Irish Government that Snubs the Irish Diaspora’s and Ireland’s Traditional Values and Christian Faith.”

NEW YORK, NY, March 11, 2019 — The organizers of an event intended to celebrate the pro-life heritage and historic contributions of the Irish Diaspora in America — in opposing abortion laws and protecting human life — have expressed disappointment and alarm at the New York Irish Consulate’s decision to turn down its application to stage the inaugural event at the Consulate.

The event would have showcased the legacy and extraordinary work in the US of ordinary Irish American citizens and residents—including religious, civil servants, first responders, military and police officers, homemakers, corporate executives, labor leaders, lawmakers and many others—who humbly dedicated their lives to the preservation and dignity of human life, from conception to natural death. Some of these same pro-life champions established homeless shelters, soup kitchens, schools and hospitals, and alternatives to abortion, such as crisis pregnancy intervention programs.

The event, in the early planning stage, viewed the Irish Consulate as an ideal venue. The Consulate regularly hosts Irish American cultural and business gatherings. But the Consulate shot down the pro-life heritage idea proposed by Irish Pro-Life USA.

“In hindsight, we were not exactly surprised given the sad turn to the ideological left of Ireland’s government under An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar,” said John Aidan Byrne, founder and president of Irish Pro-Life USA, the grassroots group of pro-life friends of Ireland in the US. “Leo Varadkar and his Fine Gael-led government, campaigned for and then shamelessly celebrated the introduction of extreme and cruel abortion services in Ireland, paid for by hard-pressed Irish tax payers, even if these tax payers have a conscientious objection to abortion.”

Another Irish-American pro-life leader was also upset.

“It is a very sad day for the Irish American community when a major consular office of Ireland in a major US city — a satellite of the Irish government abroad — rejects a sensible and worthy petition to host a pro-family event at its offices in Manhattan,” said Chris Slattery, founder and CEO of the pro-life Expectant Mother Care/EMC Frontline Pregnancy Centers in New York City. “This event aims to honor individuals, organization and members of the Catholic Church and other faiths who have defended the sanctity and dignity of human life from conception until natural death,” added Slattery. “The Irish Diaspora have been let down by the Irish Consulate in New York by its misguided and ill-judged decision.

Byrne said the staff and leaders at the Consulate have always been unfailingly polite and professional. Last year, the Consulate hosted a delegation of Irish-American pro-life activists opposed to the repeal of Ireland’s pro-life Eighth Amendment. Sadly, Irish voters ultimately repealed the Amendment. Byrne, a dual US and Irish citizen who grew up in Ireland, led the Consulate delegation, which included Slattery; Dr. Patrick McSharry of Co. Sligo, Ireland, then at the Harvard School of Public Health; Marcella Taggart, a nurse from Dublin, Ireland working in the New York metro area; and Steven Aden of Americans United for Life. The Consulate was warm and welcoming, Byrne recalled.

“Today, it seems that recognizing, promoting and celebrating pro-life values is anathema to the Irish Consulate in New York, which is now a tax-payer-funded, pro-abortion, increasingly secular PC outpost of the Irish government that snubs the Irish Diaspora’s and Ireland’s traditional values and Christian faith,” Byrne said. “It is now firmly under the thumb of a government in Dublin hostile to life-affirming values — and our strong Christian and Catholic heritage — that have served the Irish nation and its exiles very well for generations.”

The Consulate initially rejected the petition by Irish Pro-Life USA to host the event either this March or April, citing “our calendar commitments for the month of March and April,” presumably a reference to the heavy schedule of events before and after surrounding the feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. Indeed, it was this special celebration that inspired the Irish pro-life group to consider March and April. When the pro-life group said it was prepared to host the event at later dates, the Consulate also shot down that proposal. “The Consulate cannot host political events,” noted the Irish Consulate in New York, in an e-mail response to Byrne that surprised him.

In reply, Byrne e-mailed the Consulate to remind this Irish government agency in New York City that the non-profit, US-based pro-life group, Irish Pro-Life USA, is not a political party and the proposed Consulate event was “non-political.” The group said it would be delighted if the Consulate has a change of heart.

“We have certainly supported and promoted — and will continue to do so — pro-life lawmakers and politicians affiliated with different political parties in Ireland, in the US and worldwide, but we are not a political party,” Byrne said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Ireland’s diplomatic mission in New York, the Irish Consulate, would now appear to be taking direct orders with blind obedience from a morally bankrupt government in Ireland.”

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE DEFENDS PRO-LIFE TRUMP CHANGES TO TITLE X

On March 20th, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed by veteran reporter Christian Wade, the State House Bureau Chief of the North of Boston Media Group. Wade asked Doyle about the revisions the Administration of President Donald J. Trump is implementing in U. S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations to ensure that Title X funds, intended for so-called Family Planning, are not used for surgical abortions.

Trump’s changes would have four effects: they would prohibit Title X recipients from engaging in abortion referrals; they would mandate a physical and financial separation between so-called family planning services and surgical abortion facilities; they would make Title X funds available to faith based groups which oppose abortion and which counsel abstinence and fertility awareness; and they would end Title X funding to abortion perpetrators which refused to comply with the first two provisions. Planned Parenthood will lose nearly $60 million, annually, in federal tax monies.

Doyle said the Trump changes are “modest and reasonable revisions to bring disbursement formulas fully into compliance integrity with the clear legislative intent of Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970, which states, unequivocally, that ‘None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.’

Doyle’s comments were included in stories which appeared on March 21st in, among other publications, The Salem Evening News, The Gloucester Daily Times, and The Newburyport News.

On March 19th, the New Boston Post, in an article entitled “Markey Hits Trump Rule on Planned Parenthood; Catholic Group calls Markey ‘Professional Panderer,’” provided extensive coverage of the League’s criticism of U. S. Senator Edward Markey, for joining with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts to denounce U. S. Department of Health and Human Services regulatory revisions which would ensure compliance with longstanding statutory prohibitions against the use of federal tax dollars for abortion. The Catholic Action League called Markey’s comments “shameless sycophancy from a professional panderer.”

On March 18th, League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed by radio host Mike Church on “The Mike Church Show,” on the Crusade Channel of the Veritas Radio Network. The topic was Boston’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, which Doyle described as an “Irish themed secular carnival, devoid of Catholic content, and entirely disconnected from Saint Patrick and the Faith he brought to Ireland.” Mike Church also posted both a summary of the interview and the League’s News Release on his website.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CRITICIZES ED MARKEY ON TITLE X FUNDING

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized U. S. Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts), for his opposition to proposed changes in Title X funding, which would enforce, more effectively, the statutory prohibition on the use of federal tax money for abortion.

The Administration of President Donald J. Trump is implementing regulatory changes in the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services to bring the disbursement formulas for family planning dollars into full compliance with Title X of the Public Health Service Act of 1970, which states that “None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

Under these changes, federally funded family planning organizations would not be permitted to engage in abortion referrals as part of family planning, and would be required to separate, physically and financially, abortion facilities from family planning services. The Trump Administration changes do not go as far as those implemented by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, which also prohibited abortion counseling.

As a consequence of these regulatory revisions, nearly $60 million in federal tax monies would be redirected away from abortion giant Planned Parenthood. Now, for the first time, faith based groups will be able to receive Title X funds, as abortion referral and counseling would no longer be required as a condition of eligibility.

This morning, at a press conference at the Planned Parenthood facility on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, Senator Markey joined representatives of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts to denounce the changes. Markey said “We cannot let this stand” adding that the new regulations are “just another line of attacks in the Republican plan to take women’s rights back to the 19th century.”

During his nearly four years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and for his first seven years as a Representative in Congress, Ed Markey was an opponent of abortion and the public funding of abortion.

The Catholic Action League characterized Markey’s remarks as “shameless sycophancy from a professional panderer.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “Ed Markey is terrified that what happened to Congressman Joe Crowley in New York and to Congressman Mike Capuano in Massachusetts—a member of Congress who stayed closer to his constituents than Markey ever did—is going to happen to him. That is why he stood next to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to embrace the unreality of the Green New Deal and that is why Markey, a graduate of four Catholic schools, showed up at Planned Parenthood this morning.”

In Congress, he has reversed himself on a host of issues including abortion, forced busing, and school prayer. He also flip flopped on the death penalty when he was a state representative. CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE RAPS SOUTH BOSTON PARADE, URGES REMOVAL OF SAINT PATRICK’S NAME

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized South Boston’s Evacuation Day/Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and called upon the parade organizers—the Allied War Veterans Council—to remove the name of Ireland’s patron saint from the event.

The League characterized the parade as “an Irish themed secular carnival, devoid of Catholic content, and thoroughly disconnected from Saint Patrick and the Faith which he brought to Ireland.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle commented: “Saint Patrick was a Catholic archbishop and is a Catholic saint. The celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day was instituted to commemorate the apostle who evangelized and Christianized Ireland.”

“It is unclear how you honor Saint Patrick by providing a platform to the homosexual group OUTVETS, which not only repudiates the moral beliefs of Saint Patrick’s religion, but castigates those beliefs as prejudice, bigotry, hatred and homophobia.”

“In his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, Saint Patrick urged Catholics to disassociate themselves from those who participated in the murder of the innocent. The parade showcases however, politicians who reject the sanctity of human life. The first division was lead by three supporters of Planned Parenthood, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, and U. S. Congressman Stephen Lynch.”

“The parade’s principal corporate sponsor was Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, who contributed more than two million dollars to the legalization of same sex so-called marriage. Its other major sponsor was Gillette, whose corporate parent, Procter & Gamble, is a donor to population control causes. Gillette’s threat to withhold the use of its property as a staging area for the parade was a significant factor in forcing the admission of OUTVETS into the parade.”

“Saint Patrick delivered Ireland from pagan moral practises. The South Boston parade now celebrates those practises. As presently constituted, the parade, which misappropriates, exploits and cheapens the venerable name of a saint, is an insult to Saint Patrick and an affront to faithful Catholics. Organizers should have the simple decency to remove his name from the tawdry anti-Catholic spectacle on Broadway in South Boston.”

Perhaps nowhere else in Christendom can an entire nation and its vast diaspora of descendants trace their Catholic Faith and culture — and their prospects for eternal salvation — to a single saint. Our debt of gratitude to Saint Patrick is immense and unmeasurable.

Saint Patrick (+461) is the Apostle of Ireland and was the first bishop and archbishop of Armagh. He is also the principal patron saint of the Archdiocese of Boston.

The feast of Saint Patrick is not “a municipal festival,” as one non-Catholic judge erroneously asserted during the Saint Patrick’s Day parade case twenty-seven years ago. Nor is it merely a communal celebration of ethnic pride, as one nominally Catholic ex-state senator tried to tell us.

We commemorate the feast of our patron saint because he brought the Catholic Faith to Ireland, delivering that nation, and us, from the darkness of paganism, and showing us the fountains “that rise in the heart of Our Savior above.”

Only two Catholic organizations in Massachusetts in the last quarter of a century, the Immaculate Heart of Mary School and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, have publicly defended the venerable name of our patron saint from sacrilegious exploitation and coarse trivialization by the enemies of Catholicity. The silence of our bishops, priests, deacons, and religious is a terrible betrayal, which speaks to cowardice, the loss of Faith, the desire for human respect, and the malign influence of effeminacy in the ranks of the Church.

As the contemporary forces of paganism continue their assault against the Christian character of March 17th, and attempt to deform our feast day, let us never forget that Saint Patrick’s Day is a Catholic holy day in honor of a Catholic Saint. Sancte Patrice, Ora pro nobis.

There are only two writings of Saint Patrick extant. The first is his Confession, while the other is his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. The latter bears a prophetic relevance to the modern crisis of abortion. In it, our patron saint exhorts Catholics to avoid all fraternization with those who participate in the willful murder of the innocent: “Therefore I ask most of all that all the holy and humble of heart should not fawn on such people, nor even share food or drink with them, nor accept their alms, until such time as they make satisfaction to God in severe penance and shedding of tears...” He goes on to warn that “The Most High does not accept the gifts of evildoers.”

When you see our modern priests, prelates, and Catholic schools giving, unlawfully, awards, honors or platforms to politicians who promote the mass killing of the unborn, please remind them of the words of Saint Patrick!

C. J. DOYLE DISCUSSES ROE ACT, CHURCH SCANDALS AND SAINT BENEDICT CENTER ON CLOSE TO HOME

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle was interviewed today for two segments of Close to Home, the pro-life, public access television program cablecast by WCCA-TV in Worcester. Close to Home is hosted by the outspoken pro-life advocate (and longtime exponent of Marian piety) Molly Finn.

In the first interview, Doyle discussed, amid the backdrop of so many problems in the Church, the bewildering decision by the troubled, scandal ridden Diocese of Manchester to impose draconian sanctions on the traditional Catholics of the Saint Benedict Center in Richmond, New Hampshire—a move applauded by the vicious, bigoted Christophobes of the radically anti-Catholic Southern Poverty Law Center.

In the second segment, Doyle detailed the provisions and implications of the latest special interest legislation by Planned Parenthood in Massachusetts, the so-called ROE Act, which is intended to maximize the ease and convenience of child murder in the Bay State.

The first program will be shown on Monday, March 4th, at 5:30 pm. It will be repeated on Tuesday, March 5th, at 3 pm, on Wednesday, March 6th, at 9 pm, on Thursday, March 7th, at 12:30 pm, and on Friday, March 8th, at 6 pm.

In his second column in four days castigating the Catholic Church, Peter Borre complained that Pope Francis is demonizing Church critics, (Borre: ‘Devil’ slam is a bad start to key summit for Pope Francis, 2/20/2019).

In this controversy, Borre and the current Pontiff actually seem to have something in common. Neither of them is willing to candidly acknowledge the predominant role of homosexual priests in the clerical abuse scandals.

One of the findings in a November, 2018 study by the Ruth Institute was that there was a strong correlation between the percentage of self-described homosexuals in the Catholic priesthood and the incidence of sexual abuse of minors by the clergy. As the 2004 John Jay Report revealed, the overwhelming majority of priestly abuse cases—78%—involved adult same sex predation of post-pubescent males. A 2019 Belgian study reported that 76% of clerical abuse victims were male.

There can be no cure for this plague if political correctness prevents an accurate diagnosis of its nature and origins.

SHOULD CATHOLICS CELEBRATE THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS?

With the 2019 Super Bowl victory by the New England Patriots, should Catholics join in celebrating a capitalist corporation which promotes moral depravity and sexual perversion, and which opposes religious freedom?

The New England Patriots, as a corporation, and the Kraft family, as individuals, as foundation sponsors, and as corporate donors, have a long history of publicly supporting and copiously funding organizations which advocate the deformity of marriage, the homosexual agenda, and so-called “transgenderism.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was one of the most prominent public figures in a group of 165 Massachusetts business and banking leaders who opposed the Protection of Marriage Amendment in 2006.

The New England Patriots, as a corporate entity, and Bob and Myra Kraft, as individuals, after being solicited by MassEquality, signed on to an amicus curiae brief in the Obergefell case, in which the U. S. Supreme Court in 2015, in a majority opinion written by then Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, overturned the laws of thirty-one states banning same sex so-called marriage.

Both the Patriots and the Kraft owned New England Revolution were part of the coalition which advocated for a “Yes on 3” vote in the 2018 referendum which upheld the coercive Massachusetts “transgender rights” law.

The late Myra Kraft was a major financial supporter for Keshet, an organization which promotes homosexual acceptance in the Jewish community.

BAGLY—the Boston Alliance of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Queer Youth—a vile organization which proselytizes minors for sodomy—reportedly boasted that they received a $100,000 grant from the Kraft family.

All of these Kraft supported groups oppose conscience clause protections and religious freedom rights for those who have moral objections to the deconstruction of traditional marriage.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “The Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Saint John Paul II in 1992, describes homosexual behavior as “grave depravity,” while Catholic tradition characterizes the sin of impurity against nature as the second of the four sins “which crieth to heaven for vengeance.”

“Catholics, to be faithful to their Redeemer, must learn to be counter-cultural. They should neither celebrate or subsidize individuals or corporations which undermine Divine and natural law, which promote mortal sin, which oppose the liberty of the Church, and which encourage the persecution of Christians.”

“The easy going social conformity of previous generations of American Catholics, with their ethic of assimilation and their tradition of accommodation, is no longer adequate for a time when Christian civilization is being targeted for cultural extinction. American Catholics must defend the Faith as their ancestors did in Europe, with the cardinal virtue of fortitude, and with the understanding that if they are ever to be members of the Church Triumphant in heaven, they must first be members of the Church Militant on earth.”

NO VOTE YET ON ABORTION EXPANSION IN RHODE ISLAND

Hundreds of pro-life advocates and supporters gathered at the Rhode Island State House in Providence on Tuesday, January 29th, for a public hearing which lasted from 5pm Tuesday afternoon until 3am Wednesday morning. The hearing, held by the Judiciary Committee of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, allowed public testimony on two bills to expand and codify abortion in the Ocean State.

One measure, H 5127, THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE ACT, would repeal all legal restrictions on late term abortions and on methods of abortion. It would also weaken public oversight by the Rhode Island Department of Public Health of abortion perpetrators, expand taxpayer funding of abortions, and repeal fetal homicide laws which punish criminal assailants for causing the death of an unborn child while assaulting the mother.

The proposed law, filed by Representative Edith Ajello (D-Providence), has 39 sponsors in the Rhode Island House, which has only 75 members. Its supporters include Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea, State Treasurer Seth Magaziner, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative Robert E. Craven, Sr.

Raimondo is a nominal Catholic, while Gorbea is a member of the Advisory Board of Salve Regina University.

The second measure, H 5125 THE REPRODUCTIVE PRIVACY ACT, sponsored by House Labor Committee Chairwoman Representative Anastasia Williams (D-Providence), would not only repeal all remaining restrictions on abortion, and codify Roe v. Wade in state law, but would effectively nullify the state’s parental consent law on abortion.

Testimony was also heard on three pro-life measures. Representative James McLaughlin (D-Cumberland), is the principal sponsor of both H 5198 THE RHODE ISLAND RIGHT TO LIFE ACT, which would guarantee the legal protection of pre-born persons from the moment of fertilization, and H 5199, HOUSE RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE FETUS AS A HUMAN LIFE UPON THE EXISTENCE OF A HEARTBEAT.

Representative Arthur Corvese (D-North Providence), is sponsoring H 5114 THE RHODE ISLAND UNBORN CHILD PROTECTION FROM DISMEMBERMENT ABORTION ACT.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Craven said he expects a favorable Committee report on one of the pro-abortion measures in late February or early March.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “The prospect of honest judges on the U. S. Supreme Court, who will not abuse their office, but who will be faithful to their oath and who will respect the separation of powers, terrifies the political Left in this country. RHODE ISLAND TO FOLLOW NEW YORK ON ABORTION EXTREMISM

The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations—the state with the highest percentage of Roman Catholics in the United States—is planning to follow Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State of New York in legalizing infanticide up to the moment of birth.

On Tuesday, January 29, 2019, the Committee on the Judiciary of the Rhode Island House of Representatives will hold a public hearing at the Rhode Island State House in Providence on two extreme, Cuomo style abortion expansion bills—H 5127 and H5125. The hearing will begin at 4pm.

House Bill 5127 is coined the Reproductive “Healthcare” Act and is Planned Parenthood’s pet project. It is almost identical to the child-killing legislation that was passed in New York last week.

If enacted, 5127 would not only lead to an increase in the number of abortions, but expose Rhode Island mothers to increased dangers. Supporters of 5127 claim it merely seeks to update Rhode Island’s laws to make them consistent with Roe v. Wade. As bad as that would be, this claim is false. The changes this bill would make instead would authorize abortion through all nine months, for any reason, with no restrictions, up until birth.

H5127 would:

  • Eliminate any constitutional restrictions on late-term abortions.
  • Eliminate any constitutional restrictions on methods of abortion.
  • Undermine the authority of the State and the Department of Health from enacting and adopting constitutional restrictions on the performance of abortions at facilities where abortions are performed.
  • Require the State to pay for all abortions sought by Medicaid-eligible pregnant women.
  • Repeal existing constitutional protection for a viable unborn child from criminal assaults on the child’s mother.

What do you do on Tuesday?
There are three main things that you can do tomorrow at the State House that are very helpful:

1) Show up and be a visible supporter of Life.
Just your presence is very important. Legislators will be gauging the numbers and passion of the pro-life movement, so it's critical that we show up and show them how much we hate abortion and love life.

2) Sign your name in favor of the Life bills and opposed to the Abortion bills.
This will be an official record of everyone who showed up and supported/opposed the legislation. You will need to wait in line before getting to the front and signing. Please take the time to do this.

3) Testify.
Please do your best to stick around and testify in front of the Committee. You may need to wait hours before your name is called, but it is very much needed. You may testify about the specific points of the bills or just express your general feelings about abortion. Contact us if you have any questions about testifying.

Remember: Every one of the 60 million children killed by abortion in this country could not speak for themselves. There is no other way — we have to be their voice. Let’s make that voice as loud as possible tomorrow so that we’re heard in the Governor’s office.

REVEREND MYRON McCORMICK, OFM, RIP

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Father Myron McCormick, OFM, who died on January 21st, at the grand old age of 98. He was a professed Franciscan friar for 71 years—a member of the Holy Name Province of the Order of Friars Minor—and was a Catholic priest for 66 years. For 24 years, he was stationed at Saint Anthony’s Shrine on Arch Street in Boston.

A faithful priest, an orthodox Catholic, and a loyal son of his Seraphic Father, Saint Francis of Assisi, Reverend Myron McCormick was a longstanding member of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 26th at Saint Anthony’s Shrine at 9:30 am, followed by internment in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury. There will be a brief wake, also at the Shrine, beginning an hour before Mass.

O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your servants and handmaids departed the full remission of their sins, that, through our devout prayers, they may obtain the pardon, which they have always desired.

SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER CHEERS DIOCESE OF MANCHESTER

The anti-Catholic bigots of the Southern Poverty Law Center—the extremist organization which monetizes left-wing paranoia by demonizing Americans who believe in Christian morality—are applauding the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester for its heavy handed attempt to shut down the religious ministry of a small group of traditional Catholics, the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the Town of Richmond, New Hampshire.

“I’m really proud of the Catholic Church’s decision here,” said Heidi Beirch of the Southern Poverty Law Center. “They’ve denounced them for years over their anti-semitism.”

The radical SPLC has, for years, perpetrated a campaign of defamation against traditional Catholics, categorizing them as “hate groups” comparable to neo-Nazis and the KKK. While claiming alleged anti-Semitism as an excuse, the SPLC’s actual motive in targeting these Catholics—beyond the obvious fund raising incentives—is contempt for the Biblical and natural law understanding of homosexuality upheld by faithful Catholics.

Among the hysterically deranged and absurdly dishonest claims made by the SPLC in their project to vilify the Slaves are charges that the brothers and nuns train in firearms and martial arts, have rifles with night vision scopes, and are believed to engage in automatic weapons fire.

The SPLC has also mis-characterized as “hate groups” such mainstream conservative organizations as the Alliance Defending Freedom, the American Family Association, the Liberty Counsel, and the Family Research Council, whose Washington headquarters was the object of a terrorist shooting by a man acting on the SPLC claim that the FRC was promoting hate.

The SPLC is acclaiming the draconian decrees by the Manchester Diocese aimed at the complete suppression of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of the Saint Benedict Center, a ministry which defends the traditional Catholic doctrine of Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus—Outside the Church there is no salvation.

The diocese has not only deprived the Center of the services of a priest and prohibited the celebration of Mass and the administration of the sacraments there, but has told Catholics not to support the Center or send their children to its school or summer camp. It has even demanded that the Slaves contact the IRS and the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office and deny that they are a Catholic organization.

Although a small diocese, Manchester is one of the more troubled Catholic jurisdictions in the country. More than sixty priests and religious order brothers have been accused of sexual abuse, and both former Diocesan Bishop John B. McCormick and former Auxiliary Bishop Francis Christian have been accused of protecting predators. In December, 2002, the diocese avoided criminal indictments by agreeing to periodic audits by the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office.

The former chancellor and public face of the diocese, Msgr. Edward J. Arsenault, was sentenced to state prison in 2014 after being found guilty of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in church funds to maintain his lavish lifestyle and those of his same-sex paramours. He was defrocked in 2017. Some years earlier, another priest, the Very Rev. Richard T. Lower, who was a close friend of Arsenault, committed suicide after being accused of molestation. Manchester is also the home of the controversial canonist, Father Georges de Laire.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “At at time when grand juries are being empanelled to investigate past cases of the molestation of minors by Catholic clerics, when top ranking prelates are being exposed as serial predators or their enablers, and when seminaries are under investigation for their same sex corporate culture, the real problem in the Church, according to the Diocese of Manchester, is a small group of orthodox Catholics who agree with Saint Augustine about the necessity of the Catholic Faith for salvation.”

“If the leaders of the Church had only pursued the rapists and the perverts in the clergy with the same inflexible intensity with which they are now trying to destroy the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary—one of the few Catholic religious orders completely untainted by charges of sexual misconduct—perhaps two-fifths of all baptized Catholics in America would not have abandoned the Faith. The diocesan Precepts of Prohibition against the Slaves and their Saint Benedict Center are not only unjust, unwarranted, and unprecedented, but are astonishingly ill-timed, iron-fisted, and tone deaf. The credibility of the American Catholic hierarchy is at an historic low.”

“Meanwhile, the two Catholic institutions of higher education in New Hampshire, Saint Anselm’s College and Rivier University, both of which host LGBT events and groups which reject Catholic moral teaching, remain in good standing with the Diocese of Manchester.”

Damien Fisher’s venomous article on the Saint Benedict Center was a toxic mixture of pejorative language, invidious characterizations, malicious falsehoods and calculated omissions, (NH based ‘only Catholics go to heaven’ group sanctioned by Church; aspiring nun allegedly held against her will, 1/19/2019).

Fisher’s overtly hostile reference to the group’s superior as “Louis Villarrubia, who presents himself as Brother Andre Marie,” was, clearly, intended to be demeaning. It would be unimaginable for any reporter to describe the female prelates of the Lutheran or Episcopal Churches in such a manner.

Even more problematic was Fisher citing at face value the assertions of the Southern Poverty Law Center, without informing his readers of that organization’s longstanding campaign of defamation against both traditional Catholics and mainstream conservatives.

The dredging up of a bogus and discredited charge that someone was being held against their will at the monastery was an appalling exercise in unethical journalism. Fisher carefully omits telling his readers who, if anyone, made this accusation. Since even Fisher reported that the person in question denied this, and that law enforcement investigated this without taking further action, what possible purpose was there in repeating this lie in the story’s headline, beyond inciting public alarm, and holding the Saint Benedict Center up to public opprobrium?

The Union Leader did its readers no service in providing Damien Fisher with a platform to ventilate his unconcealed rancor towards these innocent, unoffending, traditional Catholics.

The implausible claim by former Irish President Mary McAleese that Saint John Paul II tried to humiliate her during a February, 1999 visit to Rome finds no support in eyewitness accounts or media reports from the period, (Mary McAleese knows her place, 1/10/2019).

Of course, when it comes to the Catholic Church, McAleese has a strident history of making implausible claims, unsupported by the facts, as when she said Catholic moral teaching caused homosexuals to commit suicide, or when she declared infant baptism to be a human rights violation.

We do know that the Pope was 78 at the time, in frail health, and recovering from an illness. We also know that no similar tale of alleged discourtesy was ever recorded by any of the thousands of visitors which the pontiff received in his lifetime.

Whatever happened, it did not constrain a smiling and solicitous McAleese, in front of news cameras, from warmly greeting the Pope again during a second visit in November, 2003.

To the Editor:

Gary Wills’ analysis of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is unrevealing, (Celibacy isn’t the cause of the church sex-abuse controversy; the priesthood is, 1/3/2019).

Rather than offer an original insight, Wills recycles an historically Protestant, rejectionist view of Catholic ecclesiology, leavened with a bit of modernist skepticism. The assertion that chronic sexual abuse is intrinsic to the priesthood and Catholic religious life is, at least, two centuries old. We have heard it all before.

Wills’ claim, based on his neo-Protestant interpretation of the word presbyter, that the priesthood does not appear in the New Testament, is another example of Reformation revisionism. The overwhelming witness of the Church Fathers, with their repeated references to authority, offerings, ordinations, altars, and mysteries, indicates that they understood presbyters to be sacrificing priests.
