Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle will appear today and tomorrow on the Boston Neighborhood Network program “Life Matters,” hosted by Brendan O’Connell. Doyle will be interviewed by guest host John J. Fahey.

They will discuss Mayor Marty Walsh’s recent proposal to turn Boston into a so-called sanctuary city for abortions; Planned Parenthood’s praise of the Boston City Council, most of whose members are Catholic, for going on the record to support the public funding of abortion; and the role of Cardinal O’Malley and the Archdiocese of Boston in enabling and promoting pro-abortion, nominally Catholic politicians by conferring upon them — contrary to explicit prohibitions — awards, honors, and platforms.

“Life Matters” will be cablecast today, Monday, December 26th, at 1:30 PM and at 9:PM, and tomorrow, Tuesday, December 27th, at 9:AM, 1:30PM, 3:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 11:30 PM. It may also be aired on Wednesday, December 27th.

In addition to Boston, “Life Matters” is shown in more than 120 communities in Massachusetts. If you live outside of Boston, the program will be coming to your local cable access channel soon.

In asserting that Boston could become a sanctuary city for abortion, Marty Walsh is pandering to and posturing for his allies in NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, who gave him the “Men for Choice” award earlier this year, ( Villani: Walsh says Boston could be haven for abortionists, 11/17/2016).

Walsh knows well that, given the Supreme Judicial Court’s 1981 Moe v. Hanley decision, which invented a right to abortion under the Massachusetts Constitution, any future change in Roe v. Wade — unlikely for some time — will have no effect in this state.

Still, it is nice of the Mayor to help his friends in the abortion industry with their fundraising appeals, which have taken an increasingly apocalyptic tone since Donald Trump was elected President.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE TO HOLD ANNUAL CURLEY COMMEMORATION

This Saturday, November 12, 2016 is the 58th Anniversary of the death of Massachusetts Governor and Boston Mayor James Michael Curley. The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts will hold its Annual Rosary at the Curley grave site in Old Calvary Cemetery, off Cummins Highway in Roslindale, at 12 noon. Mayor Curley’s grave is located directly behind the chapel at the top of the hill, visible from Cummins Highway. All Catholic Action League members are invited to participate.

November is the month of the Holy Souls, when the Church remembers in her prayers the faithful departed. WRITTEN COMMENT TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS SENTENCING COMMISSION

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts wishes to be recorded in opposition to a favorable recommendation for the ninth item of your public hearing agenda, the repeal of so-called archaic and/or unconstitutional statutes.

Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 272, Sections 19 and 21A, which prohibit the procuring of a miscarriage, and Section 34, which prohibits the “abominable and detestable crime against nature,” remain on the statute books unenforced because the legislative body which enacted these measures, the General Court of the Commonwealth, had its lawful and longstanding jurisdiction in these matters usurped by either the United States Supreme Court in such decisions as Roe v. Wade and Lawrence v. Texas, or the Supreme Judicial Court in such decisions as Moe v. Hanley and Commonwealth v. Balthazar.

Many Americans believe that these rulings are, by no means, settled law, and represent an unconstitutional intrusion by the judiciary into the legislative process, subverting the separation of powers. Repealing these laws under compulsion from court rulings would further establish an unwarranted judicial supremacy unknown to the Founding Fathers of the United States or those of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Finally, it is unclear how a judicial branch agency, charged with making recommendations for sentencing guidelines, should be considering a matter more appropriately the business of a committee of the Legislature. Article XXX of the Declaration of Rights of the Massachusetts Constitution specifically enjoins the judiciary from exercising legislative authority.

I urge that this issue be left, in conformity to the Constitution of the Commonwealth, to the jurisdiction of the elected representatives of the people in the Legislature.

To the Editor:

Globe columnist Thomas Farragher believes the Catholic Church, in this election season, assigns an unwarranted priority to defending life in the womb, (Abortion: not the only issue, 10/26/2016).

Given that surgical abortion alone claims the lives of over one million innocent American children each year, and that Catholicism has condemned the practice for twenty centuries, the Church's emphasis is neither unreasonable nor surprising.

Farragher makes no moral argument about abortion. Instead, he invokes poll numbers which indicate a majority of self-identified Catholics in the country reject a Catholic understanding of the Fifth and Sixth Commandments of the Decalogue, as if intrinsic evils are rendered acceptable by their widespread practice.

Abortion seems to discomfort the consciences of liberal Catholics. As a balm, they suggest to us, as does Farragher, that if we vote for their progressive allies, many of whom have been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America, the social welfare programs which they promote will actually reduce the number of abortions. This is unpersuasive.

If Farragher believes that the killing of the unborn should remain legal and, largely, unrestricted, he ought to just say so, and stop insulting our intelligence with the implausible claim that abortion proponents are the ones best equipped to mitigate the consequences of their own extremism.

MONTH'S MIND MASS FOR PAUL LIKOUDIS

This Saturday, October 29, 2016, there will be a traditional Latin Month’s Mind Low Mass for the repose of the soul of Paul Likoudis, the distinguished News Editor of The Wanderer, and a faithful friend and longtime supporter of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.

Paul, who lived in upstate New York, died on September 22nd at the age of 61, after a long battle with colon/rectal cancer. He is survived by his wife Paulette, his six children, and six grandchildren. As a husband and father, as a Catholic journalist and historian, and as a defender of the Faith, Paul was unsurpassed in his fidelity, integrity, and courage.

The Mass will be celebrated at 9AM at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish Church at 270 Elliot Street in Newton. All members of the Catholic Action League are invited to attend and to pray for Paul, and to pray for his family, who have suffered a grievous and untimely loss.

DOES CATHOLIC MORAL TEACHING MATTER ANYMORE — TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

On Thursday, October 20, 2016, three Catholic institutions, one in New York, and two in Boston, held fundraising galas which reveal, effectively, the current, debilitated state of American Catholicism, and mark yet another milestone in its spiritual and moral decline.

In all three venues, the sponsoring Catholic entity showcased public figures who promote the murder of pre-born children, the deformity of marriage, the normalization of sodomy, the corruption of minors with contraceptives, the imposition of gender ideology, the coercion of Catholic consciences in the matter of abortifacient coverage, and the legal punishment of Christians who refuse to service pseudo-marriage ceremonies. At all three events, these moral monsters were feted by Catholic elites, and greeted by a member of the College of Cardinals.

• The Annual Dinner for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, sponsored by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation — whose President is Cardinal Timothy Dolan — featured U. S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York), New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, television personality Katie Couric, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who sat next to Cardinal Dolan. Clinton had just reaffirmed, the day before, her unsparing support for child murder, while her campaign is coping with charges of anti-Catholicism following a WikiLeaks revelation that a prominent Clinton supporter, in an email exchange with campaign chairman John Podesta, called Catholics "severely backwards."
• The Inaugural Franciscan Dinner, on behalf of Boston’s Saint Anthony’s Shrine, which is administered by the Franciscan Friars of the Holy Name Province, advertised as Honorary Co-Chairmen Massachusetts Governor Charles Baker and Boston Mayor Martin Walsh. Baker, who sought to purge pro-lifers from the Republican State Committee in March, signed into law, last July, legislation which would punish those who refuse to allow biological males to use womens’ bathroom and locker room facilities. Walsh, a NARAL Pro-Choice award recipient, was recently sued for making threats and shouting obscenities at a Catholic man who refused the mayor’s demand that homosexual groups be allowed to march in South Boston’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Both Baker and Walsh march in Boston’s depraved "Pride Parade." The Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, a Capuchin, also participated in the dinner.
• The Let It Shine Gala for Regis College, which is administered by the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, featured Governor Charles Baker, former Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Thomas P. O’Neill III, Massachusetts Treasurer and Receiver-General Deb Goldberg, and Boston Herald Publisher — and longtime Margery Eagan paymaster — Patrick Purcell. The event’s "Special Guest" was Obama/Biden bundler Jack Connors, a former member of the Council of Finance of the Archdiocese of Boston, and a current Trustee of the Campaign for Catholic Schools. Cardinal O’Malley, in his second event of the evening, also attended. Meanwhile, Jesuit administered Boston College is providing interns for Planned Parenthood, and Cardinal O’Malley, just days after appearing at the Walk for Life, had his photograph — once again — in The Pilot with NARAL’s "Man for Choice" of 2016, Marty Walsh.

Any lucid person can recognize that the corruption, culture of betrayal, servility to secular elites, subservience to the spirit of the times, practical indifference to the killing of the unborn, and obsequious deference to neo-pagan political power which afflicts the hierarchy, our Catholic institutions, and their parent religious orders, is now critical, pervasive and normative.

How can one understand that surgical abortion alone means the murder of over one and a quarter million American children every year, and then invite to the head table of a Catholic gathering, and be seen conducting amicable social intercourse with a politician like Hillary Clinton, who believes that this mass slaughter ought to be legal, unrestricted and publicly funded — and that religious beliefs opposed to this depravity need to be changed?

Saint Patrick, in his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, warns his flock against relations with those who have the blood of innocents on their hands: "...it is unlawful to flatter men like these, nor should you eat or drink in their company, neither should anyone feel any obligation to receive alms from such men..." Yet, this unlawfulness is, precisely, what our hierarchy, clergy and religious practice as a matter of routine.

Even secular, American history affords an example of the perils of an unwarranted amity with unreconciled adversaries. After South Carolina seceded from the Union, the dithering President James Buchanan revealed to his cabinet that he met with three Confederate commissioners seeking the evacuation of Fort Sumter. His Attorney-General, Edwin Stanton, who was made of sterner stuff, exploded: "Met with them? You should have had them arrested."

Stanton, who thought clearly, realized that improper appearances could subvert fundamental principles. Buchanan, like our bishops, just wanted to conciliate everyone. As history records, Buchanan’s appeasement was a failure.

One is also reminded of the collaborationist Catholic hierarchy of Vichy France, several of whom had to resign after the Liberation, except that there is no evidence that the Vichy bishops ever displayed the fawning manner and fatuous smiles which adorn our modern American prelates in the presence of Planned Parenthood loyalists.

It is, therefore, incumbent upon faithful Catholics, particularly those in the pro-life and pro-family movements, to inform our spiritual leaders and Catholic institutions that their repeated, reckless and continuing scandals, in which they provide — contrary to their own explicit prohibitions — awards, platforms and honors to the enemies of the Faith, only serve to betray, undermine and trivialize our principles, which is, to say, Catholic moral teaching about the sanctity of life and the integrity of marriage. This is not acceptable. They need to be reminded that they serve Christ, not Caesar. Our bishops are successors to the Apostles, not courtiers to Henry VIII.

Secular society will never be persuaded of the truth of Catholic teaching about the protection of life or the character of marriage by Janus faced bishops, faithless friars or dissident nuns. The lives of the unborn will only be safe, and natural marriage will only be recovered, when the Catholic Church becomes serious about upholding, defending and vindicating Catholic morality in its own institutions and in its own leadership. The reform of the Church is indispensably necessary to the restoration of a civilized society.

To the Editor:

The complaint by a fringe group of cultists — The Satanic Temple — that one of their number is not being invited to give an invocation before the Boston City Council, warranted an above the fold, page three story in the Metro section of today’s Boston Globe (Satanic Temple seeks to perform City Council invocation, 10/13/2016).

In the past three weeks, public television host Emily Rooney called a Catholic saint a charlatan, Governor’s Councillor Eileen Duff demanded to know if a judicial nominee was a Catholic, and Wikileaks revealed that a ranking member of the Clinton campaign considers orthodox Catholics backward. None of this merited comparable, if any, journalistic attention by the Globe.

How can it be that the grievance of a small number of Satanists is more newsworthy than a series of attacks upon Catholics, who comprise, nearly, half the population of Massachusetts?

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CALLS FOR RESIGNATION OF GOVERNOR’S COUNCILLOR EILEEN DUFF

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is calling for the resignation of Eileen Duff (D-Gloucester) from the Executive Council of the Commonwealth following her attempt, at a confirmation hearing last Wednesday, to determine if a Baker Administration judicial nominee was a Roman Catholic.

Worcester attorney James Gavin Reardon, Jr. was nominated by Governor James Baker on August 25th as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. At his confirmation hearing on the morning of October 5th, Eileen Duff, who represents the Fifth Councillor District, began questioning him about his views on abortion.

In an apparent reference to Planned Parenthood talking points following the Hobby Lobby decision, Duff queried, "You don't feel that your religious belief would interfere with your judgment on any of this? Because we've seen it on the U.S. Supreme Court actually interfere with people's judgment." "With all due respect, we haven't determined what my religious belief is," Reardon replied.

Duff contended that Reardon had "shared with us that you’re Roman Catholic," but Reardon said he doesn’t "believe I’ve shared that," while allowing that he’d defended the Catholic Church.

"Are you Roman Catholic?" Duff asked.

"I'm not really going to get into what my religious beliefs are, respectfully," Reardon replied. Duff later brought up Reardon’s former membership in the Saint Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Worcester.

The Catholic Action League called Duff’s line of questioning "outrageous, unconscionable, unheard of, unlawful and unconstitutional."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "If a private employer in the Bay State examined an applicant about his religious faith, he would expose himself to civil liabilities, enforcement proceedings before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, and, potentially, criminal penalties in a court of law."

"Article VI of the U. S. Constitution mandates unequivocally, ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.’ There has been no religious test for state, county or municipal office in Massachusetts since the ratification of the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution of the Commonwealth in 1821."

"Since the establishment of the Fair Employment Practices Commission in 1946, Chapter 151B of the General Laws has prohibited ‘unlawful discrimination because of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry or sex,’ in employment in Massachusetts, while Title VII of the U. S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employers from discriminating in hiring based upon religion."

"No one in living memory can recall a judicial nominee being asked to identify his religion. Although a Catholic should always be willing to affirm his Faith, Reardon was correct, in this circumstance, in refusing to answer an improper question which the interrogator had no right to ask."

"The presumption behind the question by Duff is that Catholicism is suspect, and Catholics cannot be trusted to impartially administer the law. Duff is dredging up from the sewer of bigotry the same accusation of dual loyalty raised by sectarian extremists, nativists and Klansmen against Al Smith in 1928 and John F. Kennedy in 1960."

"The double standard is both predictable and appalling. She would not dare ask if a nominee were Muslim, and if she asked ‘Are you Jewish,’ she would, rightfully, be the object of national media attention. No Unitarian or mainline Protestant has ever been queried about their denominations support for abortion."

"As Councillor Duff, has, obviously, no understanding, respect or sympathy for the constitutional protections and religious freedom guarantees upon which this nation was founded, she ought to resign from office, and stop poisoning the judicial nominating process with her crude prejudices."

Duff, an out lesbian, has been endorsed by MassEquality and praised by NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. She told the State House News Service that she was raised a Roman Catholic, and "will always be a Roman Catholic at my core." She served, apparently, however, as a non-Catholic chaplain at a secular hospice facility. According to votesmart.org, Duff has a post graduate degree in ministry from a New Age institution, the Wisdom School of Graduate Studies at Ubiquity University in San Francisco, founded in 1996 by Mikhail Gorbachev aide James Garrison, a critic of Catholicism.

PROTEST EMILY ROONEY’S SLANDER OF PADRE PIO

Last Friday, while faithful Catholics were venerating a relic of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina — Padre Pio — at Holy Cross Cathedral, Emily Rooney, the host of Beat the Press on Boston’s taxpayer supported public television station, WGBH, was delivering a mean–spirited, anti–Catholic harangue, defaming the saint on her program.

“Yes! Yes! He was a charlatan!” she declaimed, slandering the saint, whose name she kept mispronouncing as “Pio Padre.” Rooney went on to compare Catholic belief in the efficacy of relics to spiritualist séances, conducted by fraudulent “mediums” who seek to separate the gullible from their money.

Rooney kept intoning “We need more healthy skepticism” and that it is “up to us,” meaning the media, to promote that. Rooney was, apparently, aroused by a Boston Globe article which quoted a detractor of the saint, but was otherwise, to Rooney’s predilections, insufficiently critical of the Catholic practice of venerating relics.

There was no public controversy here over a divisive issue. Rooney launched a gratuitous and bigoted assault on Catholic beliefs and sensibilities because our immemorial devotional practices offended her intolerant, atheistic materialism. She called for skepticism, but there was nothing questioning or skeptical about her outright and unreserved condemnation of Catholicism’s most beloved modern saint.

Please contact WGBH and let them know how outraged you were by Emily Rooney's contemptuous and unjust slander of Padre Pio.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE REBUKES EMILY ROONEY FOR DEFAMING SAINT PADRE PIO

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized public television host Emily Rooney for claiming that Padre Pio — Catholicism’s most popular modern saint — was a "charlatan."

Rooney, a former network television producer, moderates a weekly, half-hour discussion program, Beat the Press, where she and four panelists, usually a mix of columnists and professors of journalism, analyze news coverage of local and national events. The program is broadcast on Boston’s WGBH-TV, the so-called flagship station of the Public Broadcasting System.

In the days prior to last Friday’s program, the news media in Massachusetts printed and aired numerous stories about the thousands of Catholics who were standing in line to venerate a relic of Saint Padre Pio at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and at two other churches in the Archdiocese of Boston.

In the final segment of Friday night’s Beat the Press, entitled Rants & Raves, Rooney cited, approvingly, a Boston Globe article which quoted a detractor of Padre Pio, who asserted that the beloved saint was a charlatan.

She then launched into a sputtering diatribe against "the alleged saint" declaiming "Yes!Yes! He was a charlatan." Rooney attempted to cheapen Catholic belief in the efficacy of relics by comparing it to séances — notorious hoaxes where spiritualist mediums are paid sums of money by gullible victims trying to communicate with the dead.

Rooney twice mispronounced the saint’s name, calling him "Pio Padre," and referred, derisively, to the reliquary containing the saint’s heart as "a little jar." Compounding insult with absurdity, Rooney actually claimed that she spoke with "a well informed Catholic" who said she "never heard of Padre Pio," but was "humiliated" by public devotion to the saint.

Rooney kept intoning that "healthy skepticism" was needed, and that it is "up to us," meaning the media, to provide that. Unitarian Dan Kennedy of Northeastern University added: "What a bizarre story," while Jon Keller of WBZ-TV then made a joke about séances.

Apparently, the exotic rituals of the aboriginal Catholics were a source of smirking amusement for the entire panel.

Saint Padre Pio, (1887-1968), was a Capuchin friar and Catholic priest from Italy who dedicated himself to a ministry of reconciling sinners in the confessional. Penitents marveled at his spiritual direction, including his ability to read souls. Like the founder of his religious family, Saint Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio was gifted with the Stigmata — the five wounds of Christ. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002.

The Catholic Action League called Rooney’s boorish remarks "the arrogant bigotry of an elitist snob who enjoys a taxpayer subsidized platform to ventilate her crude prejudices against Catholics."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "It’s great to be a host on public television. Emily Rooney, who, prior to this, never heard of Padre Pio, couldn’t pronounce his name, and probably, could not tell you what century he lived in, can decide, based on one newspaper story, that a canonized saint, revered by millions, was a fraud. The only thing fraudulent here, of course, are Rooney’s pretensions to be a fair minded journalist."

"Rooney preaches skepticism, but doesn’t practise it. Her peremptory and denunciatory dismissal of Padre Pio, without even a cursory examination of his life and works, and without a single word in his favor, suggests not skepticism, but a mind firmly closed on the subject."

"Rooney’s gratuitous insults to Padre Pio, and the her callous contempt for the sensibilities of Catholics, comes as no surprise. She seems to be taking a page out of the book of her old boss, the late Peter Jennings of ABC News, who used his network’s coverage of the funeral of Mother Teresa of Calcutta to introduce as a guest Christopher Hitchens, who reviled that saint as corrupt. Rooney’s call for the media to debunk Catholic religious beliefs tells us all we need to know."

"Rooney — who no one would mistake for a member of Mensa — has a history of antipathy to Catholicism. She has repeated, on numerous occasions, the old 1960’s era fatuousness about Catholic teaching on contraception contributing to the overpopulation crisis. Evidently, no one has told her about the demographic winter."

"In this case, Rooney’s dogmatic disbelief recoiled at the very idea of belief in a supernatural order, and the rejection of her materialist worldview, which that belief would entail. It would seem that secularism, too, has its intolerant fundamentalists."

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE MOURNS THE DEATH OF PAUL LIKOUDIS

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts is today mourning the untimely death of one of the most valiant exponents of the Catholic Faith of our generation, Paul Likoudis, who died, after a long battle with cancer, on September 22nd. He was sixty-one.

Paul was the News Editor of The Wanderer from 1990 to 2014, where his authoritative and meticulously researched chronicles of malfeasance, mendacity and heterodoxy in high places in American Catholicism were mandatory reading for both loyal Catholics in the United States and concerned curial officials in Vatican City. A vigorous and relentless opponent of modernism and corruption in the Church, many of his findings were published in his 2002 book, Amchurch Comes Out.

As a Catholic journalist and historian, Paul Likoudis had a well deserved reputation for being honest, fearless, lucid, and orthodox. His range of writings included American Church history, just war ethics, and the neglected treasure of Catholic social justice teachings. A prolific writer and an erudite scholar, he was a disciple of Hilaire Belloc. He once told me he had studied more than eighty of Belloc’s works.

Paul Likoudis was an old friend. He possessed, in abundance, both the Theological Virtue of Faith, and the Cardinal Virtue of Fortitude. He understood that he was a member of the Church Militant. His death is a grave loss for the cause of Catholicity in America. He will be grievously missed.

The Catholic Action League wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to his wife, Paulette, to his children, and to his entire family.

CARL ANDERSON TO PRO-ABORTION CATHOLIC POLS:
RESIGN FROM OFFICE!
(BUT STAY IN THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS)

In an article in The Hill, Carl Anderson, the leader of America’s largest Catholic organization, the Knights of Columbus, has called upon Catholic elected officials who support legal abortion — despite their personal views — to resign from public office.

Anderson urged them to embrace what he described as “the John F. Kennedy option,” invoking the words of JFK in his September, 1960 speech before the Greater Houston Ministerial Association. There, the then presidential candidate told the Protestant gathering “... if the time should ever come — and I do not concede any conflict to be remotely possible — when my office would require me to either violate my conscience or violate the national interest, then I would resign the office; and I hope any conscientious public servant would do likewise.”

Anderson added: “Let’s hope today’s public servants become that conscientious.”

Curiously, Anderson avoided any mention of the far more attainable objective of just persuading them to resign from the Knights of Columbus. For more than three decades, faithful Catholics from across the United States, including numerous members of Anderson’s organization, have decried the scandal of the Knights of Columbus providing safe harbor to Catholic politicians who support abortion.

In Massachusetts, repeated efforts to remove such politicians met with unrelenting resistance from the Knights of Columbus State Council, with the connivance of the Archdiocese of Boston. These efforts ended, effectively, in May of 2010, when Anderson’s General Counsel, John A. Marrella, decreed that “... a subordinate council may not impose fraternal discipline with respect to a public figure’s official actions on matters pertaining to faith and morals. Rather, any such discipline must be made by or at the direction of the Supreme Board of Directors, which will consider the prudence of addressing the conduct of the public figure in light of the overall good of the Order.”

The references to “prudence” and the “overall good of the Order” were widely interpreted, at the time, to mean the importance of protecting the tax exempt status and the insurance business of the Knights of Columbus.

In the forty-three years since Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Board of Directors has never, to public knowledge, removed a single pro-abortion political figure from the Knights of Columbus.

Continued membership is not the only benefit afforded abortion advocates by the Knights of Columbus. Despite paper policies to the contrary, local councils of the Knights have, on numerous occasions, provided facilities to politicians who reject Catholic teaching on the sanctity of innocent human life.

Massachusetts Congresswoman Katherine Clark — a nominal Catholic endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and NARAL Pro-Choice America — celebrated her primary election victory on October 16, 2013, at Melrose Council 128 of the Knights of Columbus. This occurred during Anderson’s tenure as Supreme Knight.

Under Anderson, the Knights also made the decision to fund the liberal Catholic website Crux, where the right to life cause has been criticized and vilified. In a July 25th interview with Charles Camosy of Crux, Kristen Day of Democrats for Life — an organization which does not oppose contraception — asserted that the pro-life movement still has “a lot of hate.” Indeed, Camosy has just authored a piece rebuking Anderson himself as “absolutely incorrect” in claiming Catholics have a moral obligation to vote against pro-abortion candidates.

Anderson’s article is also problematic in as much as he misrepresents Catholic beliefs about abortion. In an untenable effort to reconcile American polling data with Catholic moral teachings, and give the Church’s defense of life the color of majority rule, Anderson makes the unsupportable claim that the Catholic position on abortion is that it ought to be “substantially restricted.”

It is improbable that Pius XI, who wrote in his encyclical, Casti Connubii, that “God is the Judge and Avenger of innocent blood, which cried from earth to heaven,” had intended the mere restriction of that which he described as “the direct killing of the innocent.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “If hypocrisy was an Olympic event, Carl Anderson would win the gold. He suggests that pro-abortion Catholic politicians should resign from office, knowing perfectly well that no one will follow his advice, but refuses to do the one thing that is within his power to accomplish — which is to expel them from the ranks of his own organization.”

“Anderson’s empty gesture insults the intelligence of pro-life Catholics, who have, for decades, watched with disgust while the Knights retained among their members politicians who worked against the Faith and the common good, opposed Divine and natural law, and committed repeated aggressions against the consciences and the constitutional rights of Catholics.”

“Given Anderson’s longstanding refusal to remove abortion proponents, his failure to effectively enforce prohibitions against facility rentals, his subsidy of Crux, and his talk about polls, one might be forgiven for speculating that his election year posturing has more to do with Republican politics than pro-life principles. Anderson, a longtime Republican, held various positions in the Executive Office of the President under Ronald Reagan. Anderson’s likely target appears to be flip-flopping Vice-Presidential nominee Tim Kaine, one of the dwindling number of Democrats prepared to admit even the most minimal private reservations to the public funding of abortion.”

“If Carl Anderson is serious about combating the mass killing of the innocent unborn, he should remove all pro-abortion office holders and political candidates from the Knights of Columbus, ensure that existing bans on hall rentals are consistently enforced, and de-fund Crux. If he is unwilling to formally expel anyone, then, perhaps, he could just ask them to resign. Call it ‘the Anderson option.’”

Please pray for the repose of the soul of James S. DiPerri of South Boston, who died on August 4th. A Christian gentleman and a longstanding member of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, Mr. DiPerri is the father of our old friend, Reverend James M. DiPerri, Pastor of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish in Waltham.

James DiPerri is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-three years, Mrs. Mary (Curran) DiPerri. In addition to Father DiPerri, he leaves his daughters, Noreen Tolosky and Mary Theresa DiPerri, his son-in-law, Mark Tolosky, and his grandchildren, Matthew and Patrick Tolosky.

Mr. DiPerri will be waked on Thursday, August 11th, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Saint Brigid’s Church, 845 East Broadway, South Boston, and again in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, on Friday, August 12th, from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by his son and namesake, Father DiPerri, at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 13th, in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church. Internment will be in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

In his third Globe column criticizing Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin, Kevin Cullen asserted that Tobin had “decreed” that former congressman Patrick Kennedy should be “denied” Communion because of Kennedy’s support for abortion, (Judge not lest ye be judged, 8/2/2016).

Tobin did nothing of the sort. In a private letter in 2007, he advised Kennedy, “I believe it is inappropriate for you to be receiving Holy Communion and I now ask, respectfully, that you refrain from doing so.”

More than two years later, in the middle of the Obamacare debate, Kennedy recklessly claimed that Tobin had instructed priests of the Diocese of Providence to withhold the sacrament from him. Unavailable for interviews after making this charge, Kennedy never produced any evidence to substantiate his allegation.

No priest, deacon or Eucharistic minister could ever be found who received such an instruction, and no media organization ever confirmed Kennedy’s story, which Tobin called “absolutely inaccurate.”

In his determination to deride Tobin, Cullen, who should have known better, repeated a baseless accusation, which never had any credibility.

NO VOTE ON HOUSE BILL 4392

On July 31st, the Massachusetts House of Representatives concluded its formal session for 2016 without bringing to the floor for a vote House Bill 4392, which, if enacted and signed into law by the governor, would have repealed the last remaining prohibitions against sodomy, adultery, and fornication in the General Laws of the Commonwealth.

The Catholic Action League wishes to extend its thanks to all of its members and supporters who took the time to contact House Speaker Robert DeLeo, House Minority Leader Bradley Jones, and their own state representatives, and express their opposition to this malign measure.

One of our members did report however, that an aide to Speaker DeLeo suggested that the bill would come up in September, which means in an informal session, on a voice vote, without a roll call — a tawdry tactic, but one not unknown in recent years to the Massachusetts Legislature.

The Catholic Action League will continue to monitor this issue and keep its members informed.

DEFEND TRADITIONAL MORALITY, OPPOSE HOUSE BILL 4392!

Because so many members of the General Court were away this week at the Democratic National Convention, the Massachusetts Legislature will close out its 2016 session with a special weekend sitting of the House and the Senate today, July 30th, and tomorrow, July 31st.

One of the proposed laws which may emerge from the Committee on Third Readings is a pernicious measure sponsored by Representative Byron Rushing, (D-Boston), House Bill 4392, which would repeal the remaining prohibitions in the General Laws of the Commonwealth against adultery, fornication, and sodomy — “the abominable and detestable crime against nature.” This repeal is a longstanding objective of homosexual activists in Massachusetts.

The bill would also remove the designation of “subversive” from the Communist Party, at a time when the so-called RevComs — Revolutionary Communists — are protesting alongside elements of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Although these laws are no longer enforced, they have significant symbolic value. The law is a teacher, from whom many in society learn what is right from what is wrong. Passage of this secularist measure would erase, in matters of sexual ethics, the last vestiges of Biblical morality and natural law in the criminal statutes of Massachusetts, completing the process of de-Christianization.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE CRITICIZES SETTLEMENT IN MATTHEW BARRETT V. FONTBONNE ACADEMY

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized the decision of Fontbonne Academy in Milton, the Catholic secondary school administered by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, to reach a legal settlement with Matthew Barrett, who was declined for the position of Food Services Director at the school after he lied in a job interview, and then revealed he had entered into a same gender civil "marriage."

In a July 9, 2013 interview at Fontbonne, Barrett — who had previously worked in the Milton Public Schools — responded affirmatively when told that all school employees were considered "ministers of the mission," and that he would be expected to model Catholic teachings and values. He then listed on an emergency contact form his so-called "husband."

When refused the position, Barrett sued the school for gender and sexual orientation discrimination in employment, and was represented by the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, (GLAAD).

In a December 16, 2015 decision for the plaintiff, Norfolk Superior Court Associate Justice Douglas H. Wilkins ruled that the Catholic school enjoyed no constitutional protections in this matter, and that neither the ministerial exception, nor the religious exemption to the 1989 Massachusetts "Gay Rights" law applied.

Fontbonne failed to appeal the decision, allowing it to stand, and, as part of the settlement, financially compensated Barrett.

The Catholic Action League called the school’s surrender "an act of appeasement which will have chilling implications for the religious freedom rights of Catholic institutions."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle commented: "If left unchallenged, this ruling will coerce Catholic institutions, in Massachusetts, at least, to hire those who not only reject Catholic moral teachings, but who believe those teachings to be bigotry, hatred and homophobia."

"More disturbingly, Judge Wilkins, in his decision, asserted that the ministerial exception extended only to the school’s administration, chaplaincy, and faculty of theology. Catholic education, however, involves teaching philosophy, history, ethics, social science, political science, and languages from a Catholic perspective. Now, under threat of civil penalties, Catholic schools may be compelled to hire and pay those who repudiate and despise that perspective to instruct Catholic students."

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE WARNS OF DANGER TO RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS IN TAX CASE BEFORE SJC

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is warning of the danger to the economic autonomy of religious institutions in the Commonwealth because of a tax case being heard this morning before the Supreme Judicial Court. In Shrine of Our Lady of La Sallette v. Board of Assessors of Attleboro, the popular Catholic shrine — administered by the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Sallette — is appealing the decision of the City of Attleboro to levy property taxes on a portion of the land owned by the religious order.

Attleboro assessors claim that a visitors center and maintenance shed attached to the shrine are not being used for a religious purpose, and therefore, are not tax exempt. As the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board upheld the city’s claim, the case now goes before the state’s highest court.

The Catholic Action League is calling the city’s attempt to arbitrarily divide the shrine’s property for tax collection purposes "a novel and unheard of interpretation of law, which will result in a dangerous and unprecedented expansion of state power, allowing municipal bureaucrats to decide which portion of religiously owned land comprises part of a religious ministry."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "Chief Justice John Marshall famously warned that ‘the power to tax involves the power to destroy.’ If Attleboro prevails, then the tax exempt status of religious property, instead of being an insurmountable barrier against state interference — consistent with the free exercise guarantees found in both the U. S. and Massachusetts constitutions — will now become a point of negotiation between religious organizations and local government."

"Government will now have an economic incentive towards defining down religious activity to worship, imperiling the ability of religious institutions to carry on their charitable and other apostolates. The danger to religious freedom is manifest."

"Empowering local government officials to decide what constitutes part of a religious ministry is, precisely, the kind of slippery slope — 'excessive government entanglement' — with religion prohibited by the U. S. Supreme Court in Lemon v. Kurtzman. Historically, many Catholic monasteries have supported themselves by operating farms, dairies and vineyards. If these can now be taxed, then the government can, effectively, shut down entire religious institutions by destroying their economic viability."

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today wrote to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth, Maura Healey, asking her to open a hate crimes investigation — under Chapter 265, Section 39 of the General Laws — regarding the ongoing vandalism of Catholic churches. Since December, four Catholic parishes in the Bay State have been the target of malicious property destruction of religious statues and stained glass windows by nocturnal vandals, three in the last six days alone.

• On December 8th, a brick was hurled through a one hundred year old stained glass window depicting Saint Thomas Aquinas at Saint Edith Stein Parish in Brockton.
• On March 25th, the evening of Good Friday, a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Norwood was doused in black paint and defaced with graffiti.
• On March 27th, the evening of Easter Sunday, three statues, including one of Our Lady, were decapitated on the grounds of Saint Margaret’s Parish in Burlington. The statue of Our Lady also had its hands cut off, and rosaries were strewn on the ground.
• On March 29th, a statue of the Virgin was decapitated at Saint Mary’s Parish in Billerica.

At least eight Catholic churches have been the object of violent depredations in Massachusetts since January of 2012. The targeting and the particular method of destruction of the representations of Our Lady, could suggest a possible occult or Satanic connection.

In his letter to the Attorney General, Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle stated: "The number and increasing frequency of these attacks upon Catholic churches, their malicious timing, coinciding with Catholic holy days, and the heartbreaking effects being suffered by the Catholic faithful, should not be treated by law enforcement as a mere accumulation of isolated incidents. As these criminal episodes have, in the past three months, occurred in Middlesex, Norfolk and Plymouth Counties, and in four different police jurisdictions, we urge the Attorney General’s Office to undertake an investigation of these acts of property destruction perpetrated against Catholic religious iconography, with a view to prosecute them as hate crimes."

Dear Attorney General,

As you are probably aware, three Catholic Churches in Massachusetts, in the last six days, have been targets of vandalism — Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Norwood, Saint Margaret’s Parish in Burlington, and Saint Mary’s Parish in Billerica. In each incident, a statue of the Virgin Mary was either defaced or decapitated. A fourth parish, Saint Edith Stein in Brockton, suffered the loss of a stained glass window depicting Saint Thomas Aquinas, when a brick was hurled through it last December.

At least eight Catholic churches in the Commonwealth have been attacked since the beginning of 2012. In the last year in New England, these episodes have increased alarmingly. Nearby, across the border in Rhode Island, four Catholic churches in Providence, including the cathedral, were the objects of either graffiti or property destruction in the summer of 2015 alone.

Chapter 265, Section 39 (a) of the General Laws states: "Whoever commits an assault or a battery upon a person or damages the real or personal property of a person with the intent to intimidate such person because of such person’s race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability shall be punished by a fine of not more than five thousand dollars or by imprisonment in a house of correction for not more than two and a half years, or by both such fine and imprisonment."

The Hate Crimes Reporting Act of 1991, (Chapter 434 of the Acts of 1991/Chapter 22C, Section 32, MGL), even more broadly defines a hate crime as "any criminal act coupled with overt actions motivated by bigotry and bias including, but not limited to, a threatened, attempted or completed overt act motivated at least in part by racial, religious, ethnic, handicap, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation prejudice, or which otherwise deprives another person of his constitutional rights by threats, intimidation or coercion, or which seeks to interfere or disrupt a person’s exercise of constitutional rights through harassment or intimidation."

The number and increasing frequency of these attacks upon Catholic churches, their malicious timing, coinciding with Catholic holy days, and the heartbreaking effects being suffered by the Catholic faithful, should not be treated by law enforcement as a mere accumulation of isolated incidents. The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is calling upon the Norwood Police and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office to pursue a hate crime investigation following the desecration of a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in the Town of Norwood. Sometime on the night of Good Friday — the most solemn day of the liturgical year — the statue, which is located on the lawn in front of the parish school, was doused in black paint and spray painted with graffiti. Initial reports indicate that the statue may be beyond repair.

Under Chapter 265, Section 39 (a) of the General Laws of the Commonwealth, property damage or destruction with the intent to intimidate because of a person’s religion shall be punished by imprisonment in a house of correction for up to two and a half years, or by a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

The Catholic Action League called the vandalism “a brazen and malicious crime, timed to inflict maximum emotional distress on the parishioners of Saint Catherine’s.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “There has been a disturbing number of attacks made against Catholic churches in New England in recent years. Just last December, a brick was hurled through a stained glass window depicting Saint Thomas Aquinas at Saint Edith Stein Parish in Brockton. The Town of Norwood, particularly, seems to have a troubling history of mayhem directed against Christian iconography. Nativity scenes in that town have been the object of repeated acts of vandalism.”

“Whatever the motivation of the perpetrators, Catholics in Massachusetts have a constitutional right to observe Holy Week and celebrate Easter without being the target of destructive depredations at the hands of lawless thugs. MORE THAN 5,8OO CATHOLICS SIGN PETITION TO REMOVE SAINT PATRICK'S NAME FROM SOUTH BOSTON PARADE

As of this morning, more than 5,800 concerned Catholics have now signed the online petition — sponsored by the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts and MassResistance — to remove the venerable name of Saint Patrick from the South Boston parade, which will be held tomorrow, on Palm Sunday.

The petition is a response to the decision by the parade organizers, the Allied War Veterans Council, to permit, for the second year in a row, two homosexual groups, OUTVETS and Boston Pride, to join the line of march.

Last year, under intense political pressure from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Congressman Stephen Lynch, a minority on the veterans council, led by Brian Mahoney and Edward Flynn, engineered a reversal of the principled, longstanding position of Council Commander John J. "Wacko" Hurley, who refused to allow any group hostile to traditional Catholic values to impose a discordant message on the parade.

Hurley, a Catholic daily communicant who died last November, won a 9 to 0 victory before the U. S. Supreme Court in June, 1995, in the landmark case of Hurley v. GLIB, which affirmed the right of parade organizers to control the content of their own parade.

The Catholic Action League is calling the presence of OUTVETS and Boston Pride "an affront to everything Saint Patrick believed in and struggled for throughout his life."

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: "The holy day of Saint Patrick is not celebrated to promote public acceptance of the mortal sin of sodomy or to legitimize other forms of behavior described by the Catechism as ‘grave depravity.’"

Perhaps nowhere else in Christendom can an entire nation and its vast diaspora of descendants trace their Catholic Faith and culture — and their prospects for eternal salvation — to a single saint. Our debt of gratitude to Saint Patrick is immense and unmeasurable.

Saint Patrick (+461) is the Apostle of Ireland and was the first bishop and archbishop of Armagh. He is also the principal patron saint of the Archdiocese of Boston.

The feast of Saint Patrick is not "a municipal festival," as one non-Catholic judge erroneously asserted during the Saint Patrick's Day parade case twenty-four years ago. Nor is it merely a communal celebration of ethnic pride, as one nominally Catholic ex-state senator tried to tell us.

We commemorate the feast of our patron saint because he brought the Catholic Faith to Ireland, delivering that nation, and us, from the darkness of paganism, and showing us the fountains "that rise in the heart of Our Savior above."

Only two Catholic organizations in Massachusetts in the last quarter of a century, the Immaculate Heart of Mary School and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, have publicly defended the venerable name of our patron saint from sacrilegious exploitation and coarse trivialization by the enemies of Catholicity. The silence of our bishops, priests, deacons, and religious is a terrible betrayal, which speaks to cowardice, the loss of Faith, the desire for human respect, and the malign influence of effeminacy in the ranks of the Church.

As the contemporary forces of paganism continue their assault against the Christian character of March 17th, and attempt to deform our feast day, let us never forget that Saint Patrick’s Day is a Catholic holy day in honor of a Catholic Saint. Sancte Patrice, Ora pro nobis.

How does The Boston Globe observe Saint Patrick’s Day? By publishing a revisionist polemic castigating Irish America for supporting Irish independence, authored by Ruth Dudley Edwards — an expatriate, Anglo-Irish apologist for the Orange Order, known for her scornful criticisms of Irish nationalism and Roman Catholicism, (How Americans pushed the Irish to war, 3/13/2016).

Predictably, Edwards accuses Irish-Americans of fomenting hatred, practicing armchair terrorism, and cementing the partition of Ireland. She fails to mention however, that prior to the Easter Rising of 1916, most Irish nationalists, including many in America, were committed to a path of peaceful, constitutional change within the United Kingdom, while northern Unionists, abetted by leaders of Britain’s Conservative Party, were preparing for armed revolt to stop home rule. It was not Irish America that introduced the gun into Irish politics.

What’s next? Perhaps a United Empire Loyalists view of the American Revolution, just in time for the Fourth of July?

Attorney Chester Darling and Judge Richard Stearns are to be commended for upholding the First Amendment in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade case (PARADE MARCHES ON, 3/16/2016).

Many Catholics find it perplexing however, that the parade organizers, the Allied War Veterans Council, are willing to stand up to Mayor Marty Walsh on the issue of the parade route, while surrendering to Walsh on the far more serious matter of homosexual groups marching.

It is a pity that the Veterans Council did not show the same courage and determination in defending the Catholic character of Saint Patrick’s Day, that they did in insisting that the parade march past Dorchester Heights.

Congratulations to our old friend Chester for preserving the integrity of Hurley v. GLIB.

What does it say, however, about these nominally Catholic, Irish-American men of the Veterans Council, that they are willing to stand up to the Mayor of Boston about the parade route, while surrendering to him about the Catholic character of Saint Patrick’s Day? The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is urging the Allied War Veterans Council of South Boston — the organizers of Boston’s Saint Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade — to remove the name of Saint Patrick from the event, as it no longer has any meaningful connection to the Catholic religion of the Apostle of Ireland.

A report in The Boston Globe this morning indicates that, for the second year in a row, in what will presumably become a permanent feature of the parade, two homosexual organizations, OUTVETS and Boston Pride, will be included in the line of march. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1992, characterizes homosexual behavior as "grave depravity."

The Catholic Action League is calling the participation of OUTVETS and Boston Pride "radically incongruent with a parade named in honor of a Catholic saint."

Eagan was photographed for The Boston Globe interviewing Fonda on WGBH Radio.

In an infamous episode during the Vietnam War, Fonda was photographed sitting in a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft battery wearing a NVA helmet. She went on to star in a Potemkin Village propaganda show exploiting American prisoners-of-war, and covering up their cruel torture at the hands of their Communist captors.

Article III, Section 3, of the Constitution of the United States says that “Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” Unlike Tokyo Rose and Lord Haw Haw, Hanoi Jane was never even indicted for her crimes.

You can be sure that the Catholic-loathing Eagan never gave the same advice to Fonda which she gave to the Pope. After all, on the two issues that matter most to Eagan, the killing of unborn children and the legitimization of sodomy, these two enemies of Christendom share a community of values.
